    hey guys
i've bought my msi gt70 4 years ago . i upgraded it from 870m to 980m with the help of amazing guys in this thread :
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-official-msi-gt60-70-970m-980m-upgrade-thread.765058/

now with the new mxm cards ( that are probably linked somehow to that new max-q nvidia technology which probably will be BGA ) .. the new mxm cards are of suitable size to be inserted to the msi gt70.
this post is to discuss whether it could be done or not . what difficulties would we encounter in term of modding the heatsink - if needed - and bios setup and most importantly power draw of the new cards . will our current hybrid power technology sustain it ?
feel free to share your thoughts please

Gecube cards are unstable for now..
1080's TDP are too high for your PSU/cooling capabilities.
I would highly suggest a 1060/1070 MSI branded and it should be okey :)

but no branded msi 1070 will fit in the current msi gt70 chassis . i was excited about the new mxm gecube cards because they are exactly he same size/shape as a normal old mxm card

I was also wondering regarding this upgrade. I also have a GT70 mine is 2PE Dominator. with original 880M
I-m looking to upgrade it to 1070 if possible but have little knowledge of how to do it.
can anyone tell me what I have to do?
also, is there a way to adapt a liquid cooling system?

Where there is a will there is a way.

I think the 880M heatsink is the same as the 980M one was which i think is good, with proper padding for the 1070.

As for the LWC adaption no idea. Lets see what you got !

    Hi! thank for the info.
I think I will proceed with the purchase of a 1070 card.
but, I was wondering about the Liquid Cooling System.
    I have found nothing concrete.
someone, in some 10 years old post (maybe exagerating), placed an external like fin heat exchanger or something, allowing him to make a removable cooling system (was connected to liquid cooling system)
but, No info has been found.
other tried some external piping with heat exchangers and fans. but... seems too bulky.
I know, I will need to modify my actual Notebook in a never done before way (by me, at least)

but... i seems to be unable to know what to do

    and thanks. yes, I'm new.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I have a similar question and interest in upgrading a MSI GT70 2PC with an 870m. I was looking for an upgrade to a 1060 or 1070 if possible. Thanks for any help!

it is possible, I would recommend adding extra thermal pads where needed to make proper contact, you might have to shim the GPU die area on the heatsink as well, and might have to triple check no components on the videocard block contact of the heatsink, and in case they do, just have a dremel handy to cut away precisely.

You could alternatively send the heatsink to whomever you buy the video card off of and have them make it fit, like I offer this always, and just send the heatsink back with the card.

Thanks for the information! That sounds great. If I wanted to get a card from you and take you up on your offer on the heatsink adjustment, what would be the best way to do it?

well, we can start with a PM, exchange paypal emails and I can ask you for a photo of the heatsink and prior to sending it to me, I can point out what I suspect would need to be done to modify it, and such.

once I get the heatsink, and complete payment for the card and shipping back, I send them back to you, maybe even installed to hold the thermal pads inplace, just needing you to remove the heatsink and add your flavour of thermal paste and install into the laptop etc..

Please keep us posted whether or not it was successful, I currently have a GT70 970m and a GT60 whitebook 680m and I am curious to see if this would work.

I have previously opened up my GT70 but i don't believe it would fit inside of the laptop physically because of the sides of the gpu.

Can you take a picture of a 970M, 980M, 680M, etc and compare it to the 1070 model?

yes. Im still paying for it but definitely moving toward the goal.
probably will take a little while to finish paying it but I estimate that at chistmast, at the latest, I'll be installing the graphic card and some HDD, SDD upgrade

How it ended up finally @Hironori Taniguchi? I am very curious about this update just for the love of knowledge hehe.

Also @woodzstack, did you get any information about a GT60/70 properly updated to GTX 1070? I do not ask 1080 since it will not fit ever in the GT60/70 TDP design.

    Txordi,
I'm waiting for the thermal paste to do the job. I already got the gtx1070
I also upgraded the HDD, and I'm waiting for the SSD external case for the disco cloning and change of the SSD (3 of them)
I think I'll start and finish modification by February.

    erm....
No, I havent done anything yet. I haven't see if it fits or need something to be done.
I haven't removed the Graphic card since it a PC I'm using.
that's why I'm waiting for the thermal paste, so I can do the change in a jiffy (if it's going to be in a jiffy)

    Just an update.
I changed the HDD, from 1TB to 4TB. as it was a backup disk (where I store xxx pics, videos, games and all the stuff I download and... eventually get decompressed) it was a piece of cake.
but the SSD... boy I suffered.
all because of the backup programs or cloning programs or the name it must be called.
the thing is I made or supposedly made a image from my previous OS with all the things in it. but then, it didn't work. windows won't start up and keeps showing an error.
so, i had to clean install all.
I'm still recovering. the office I had, which I bought in japan, no longer works here (I'm in mexico now)
so, I'll have to buy a new office soon.
and.. well, the thermal paste (and also bought thermal pad (later I learned that I might not need it, but anyway) and... oh I have to purchase a cleaner. so, it might be longer than expected.
the thermal paste, as I was saying, will arrive, hopefully this week, if not the next. and I hope by that time I can have the cleaner..., does it really have to be removed by the cleaner? or it's just because it's convenient?

WD40 works better than alcohol, and thermal compound literally melts/absorbed by paper towel when mixed.

    Hi!

I would like to ask for help. There is an MSI GT70 4.gen (barebone 1763 workstation) laptop. I do not know exactly which one. Bios is damaged. The bios menu does not come in. Black picture in the upper right corner with a short white stripe.
I may have made a mistake.
On Ebay I bought a Eurocom mxm gtx 1070 card. (incomplete gpu-data appear)
This may have caused the mistake.
Many people have told me that the gtx 1070 is not good for the laptop. (120mhz .... eDP cable etc.)
I did not believe them because I read that this was possible. Few forum posts.
I asked the seller whether this would be good for me. She said yes. So I bought it.
Previously a gtx 980m ran flawlessly. Maximum 77-78 degrees.
    Heatsink is fine.
I would go further, but I can not select the test mode for the driver modification.
    Bios version: E1763IG6.70U
Could someone send me such a version or newer?
    I would really appreciate it.
The drivers on my MSI page are not available for me.

I've already got the afuwin bios flash program for bio-refresh.

Should have gotten a 1060 MSI card which is standard size MXM 3.0b and its a great match for that single fan laptop. The 1070 would have overheated anyways. Return that card if you can and grab a cheaper 1060 and that laptop will be a powerhouse again.

Our GTX 1070 comes with 95W VBIOS so thermal spec is the same as GTX 980M. Then you can O/C if you have enough power in your laptop. For GTX 1070 you need 230W AC adapter or higher. GTX 1060 costs less but you get lower performance too.

Go with MSI 1060 GTX for your GT70. Or try Eurocom 1070 GTX if you really want one.

    Experience....

The power supply is 230W but can only be used up to 180W. Motherboard?
It needs more than 180W, but it is still good.Under the laptop load, use the battery.

Uh... This is sad man :(. I hope you get your money back and you can try again with a 1060 or Eurocom 1070.

I can not see all your images. Which laptop are you using? And yes, GT70 is 180W input limited by the absurd NOS system. When it needs more it starts using battery power, even if you have a >180W adapter.
