    I can confirm this is the case for Atheros WIFI adapters trying to use WPA or WPA2 authentication under Windows XP.

    This has been a problem for me on the following 3 laptops:

    IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T41
    Toshiba Tecra M7
    Gateway CX210X

    The Intel ProSET driver is at fault! You need to be sure that you only install the drivers and neither the ProSET function nor the advanced options in the installer.

    This will solve all connectivity issues. I had to try $200 worth of WIFI (Atheros, Broadcom) cards before I figured this out. It took me 6 months; I literally had to install drivers piece by piece and re-test wireless reconfiguration each time.
