ok here's the problem...i have a tplink router and i share my connection with 6 other people,we share a wired connection and it just works fine
I have a linksys access point router, whenever i connect it to the network ( the switch) my wireless connection works fine but it disconnects anyone else using the wired connection,it's like the access point takes all the bandwidth and blocks it from the others...is there a certain configuration i need to make to the access point so it wudnt conflict with the wired connection?
Hope my question is clear enough!
Thanks in advance

Wait... I'm not getting your setup. So you're saying you're sharing your internet connection from your notebook through it's LAN port out to a router/switch?
Or is the TPLink that you're referring to an ADSL Modem, not a router?
I'm confused.
You've got switches, routers, access points, wifi, and wired all thrown in there together... -
ummm i'm not sure what the difference is between adsl modem and a router lol
but let me try to explain again...
Me and 5 others share a dsl connection, that connections comes out of the tplink going to a switch and we are all connected to that switch through wired connections.
That wired connection works great,i got no problems with it.
I also have a linksys access point which i'd like to use so i can connect my laptop through a wireless connection instead of the wired one
So i took the cable going out of the switch to the laptop and i connected it to the access point, and so i use a wireless connection on my laptop
The problem now is,when i do that, the other 5 users that are connected to the switch through the wired connection lose their connection and the internet icon shows an exclamation mark inside a triangle saying "limited or no connectivity"
So whenever i connect the access point to the switch it disconnects anyone else connected to that switch
hope it's not more complicating now lol -

Do this...
DSL Modem ---> to WiFi Access Point WAN port ---> then connect the switch to a LAN port on the WiFi AP.
The way you had it was placing "dumb" network equipment where the "smart" network equipment should be. The IP tables were probably getting all messed up.
The TPLink is an ADSL Modem. All it does is connect you to your DSL providers network and provide you a working WAN port to access the internet.
Switches are considered "dumb" network equipment because they don't keep active IP tables or anything. They simply repeat packets back and forth to all ports active.
Routers are "smart" network equipment because they keep an active list of all connections and foward packets specifically to which IP address it's told to.
EDIT* After connecting them all together, you should un-plug them and let the IP tables be cleared out, then plug them back in and let them reacquire IP addresses. -
Dhcp server is turned on in the modem and in the access point too I think.
Buying a router would work out better I think.
Best guess your connection:
Phone line--> tplink td-8816--> 8 port switch--> 5pc
From the switch --> linksys wap54g wireles ap.---> other pc-s
A lot depends on what type equipment you got, there is ton of modems and ap-s ... but just try to go in the ap. and turn dhcp off in it.
ps.: to above post .. don't think the ap has a wan port

Often times when people say access point, they don't mean it in the true sense. And since he didn't state it's model I assumed it was just a run of the mill wireless router. -
Yep from his first post I did it too but from the second I just looked on my junk pile what ap is there ..
If he would have a router I think he would have never thought to use a switch
But who knows ... midnight and I can't keep my eyes open

model numbers would be very helpful
-
i tried what u guys suggested but it gave me "limited or no connectivity" still
i apologize for not mentioning the model numbers before...
the tplink is TD-8840T
the linksys is BEFW11S4 ver. 2,maybe it wud be useful to mention that the linksys is a "Wireless access point Router- with 4 port switch" it has a Wan port -
TD-8840T
Website:Code:* Access a high-speed DSL Internet connection * Up to 24Mbps downstream speed * Supports Annex M, which can double upstream data rates * Built-in switch connects four local PCs directly, and daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches as your network grows * QoS prioritization based on ToS, DSCP, service type or 802.1p * Triple Active Firewalls: SPI, NAT and Packet Filter * Supports DHCP, Universal Plug-and-Play (UPnP), and includes a user-friendly Setup Wizard which takes you through configuring your network, step by step * Administer and Upgrade the Router Remotely over the Internet
TD-8840T
^^ it's an adsl modem with builtin router
Wireless-B BroadBand Router (BEFW11S4)
Website:Code:* Connects to a broadband modem, a 10/100 Ethernet backbone, or wireless network * Long wireless operating range supports 300 feet indoors and 1,500 feet outdoors * Provides roaming, best access-point selection, load balancing, and network traffic filtering * Configurable through your networked PC's Web browser * Can act as a DHCP server for your existing network
http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/BEFW11S4
^^ is a router too
So you need to configure your adsl modem/router to run dhcp server with enough ip range for every pc.
In the wireless router you need to disable dhcp and give static ip on the same subnet, and turn off most things like firewall port forwarding ...
google: configure linksys router as access point

ps.: XGX2007 you were right b4 ^^ -
Hi,sorry i was away for a couple of days but now i tried what sama98b suggested,i disabled dhcp in the wireless router and changed its ip and so far it's working fine..hope it remains like that!
Thanks alot guys rep+
