I'm sorry, that's a very good question, but the delivery is just priceless! Sort of like:
Me: I can't find my glasses, have you seen them?
Wife: Have you checked on top of your head?
Me: Oh; oops! -

You would be surprised as to how many do hide them, then change/update their nb and it's MIA. Once the location is saved you normally don't need it visable, but a network runs better with it's visable.

I know. I keep mine turned off (live in an apt bldg, and I can see too many other SSIDs as it is). When I got a wireless adapter to take the place of my failing internal wireless NIC, the netgear wizard couldn't find my network initially and it took me a second of irritation before I remembered that I'd left the SSID off. That was a slap-the-forehead moment, trust me.

My apologies if this seems like mere self-promotion, but I just went through this myself. Finding far more questions than answers on the net, I eventually worked out a satisfactory solution on my own. Then I figured I might as well go back to some of the places (like this) where I had seen others asking, and try to spare them some of the same aggravation. In brief, I was never able to get anything useful out of the included MadWifi drivers, but an ndiswrapper-based solution has been working just fine. I describe the process in detail on my site. Good luck.
