I have a home office (far south end of home) and run two PCs (laptops) using a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router.
When we move the laptops to the opposite end (far north end) of the home (living room), the connection is extremely poor if there is any connection at all.
Would a uni directional antenna or high gain antenna do the trick to boost the signal? Add a repeater? New router?
There must be a 'simple' option to boost the signal, right?

A simple reflector?

A new router might be a more cost effective option.
If not then a uni directional antenna or reflector might work. The WRT54GL uses RP-TNC connectors if i recall. -
If it is possible to move the router to a more central local in the home. You could load Inssider on both laptops and see the signal strength. The Parabolic reflector suggestion in the second post can improve the signal quite a bit if you are detailed in its construction. There are also other plans and videos about this on the web.

Unfortunately, no. On the positive side, I can expense the solution, so if I need a router w/better signal strength/travel than the WRT54GL, so be it.

If you decide to get new router, there's couple tricks to do:
1. install DD-WRT on your WRT54GL and then
2. use it as range extender. You can install it standalone in some closet middle of the house
