Just finished doing a clean install of Vista x64.
For some odd reason i cant access the router settings using the wire, but i can access them if i use the wifi.... Both connections settings are exactly the same.

I've moved this to the networking forum. It's a strange problem since it's normally wireless that won't connect.
Which router? Did you try resetting it?
Does Vista 64 still have the ipconfig command (run it a DOS window) so you can see the current settings.
John -
Yeap Vista 64 has the ipconfig (shows exactly the same information as Vista 32) can paste the info if you want.
The router model is: Netgear DG834G (came free from the ISP
).
Other laptops on the same network can access the router with the wire (or using wifi). -
Perhaps LAN adapter driver problem ?? Do you get an IPV4 address for your LAN adapter ? what about the gateway, is it your router's IP ? Pasting ipconfig output would help.
-
It would also be helpful to know if you had Vista x64 before and just did a clean re-install or if you upgraded from Vista x32 or another OS. If so, I suspect a LAN adapter configuration or driver issue. Also, be sure to reset the router.

Guys, pay attention - his wireless is working (adapter), it's his Ethernet connection (wired) that isn't.
CM,
The first thing I'd do is swap your CAT-5 cable to make sure you don't have a bad cable or connector.
Second - flash the Router firmware with the current version. Even though it's a Netgear, Linksys procedures for any router problems always begin with a firmware flash to ensure baseline configuration is stable. Just make sure you save the Router settings before you do it so you can restore them after the flash.
If you want a good tool to help you find the problem, Cisco just released a program (has a full trial download) called Network magic. It and another one called SpeedMeter are good tools for Network management and tracking down problems. You can find them at: http://tinyurl.com/6xs2xp
You should also check the Access Management settings of your Router. It could be set to allow Wireless but not anything else. At the very least rule it out. -
Changing wire didnt help, still the same issue.
Just finished resetting the router. No change. Im using the latest firmware atm which didnt gave me any issues for at least a year now.
When i try to access 192.168.1.1 it tries to find the address without popping the user/pass frame. And it doesnt give an error even if you wait a long time.
Another odd thing. Sometimes it does work. Works for like 10 secs, then stops responding again. For eg it gets me into the configuration page, but after clicking a link or two it stops responding like the issue i have now. -

Went back to static settings since apparently it doesnt make any difference.
Edit:
I had Vista 32 (with no network issues). Did a clean install today of Vista 64bit. Problems started. All drivers are installed properly. -
Does your LAN adapter have a Vista 64 driver? AND more importantly, did you use it? With some hardware it doesn't matter, but with some it does require the use of the vista 64 specific driver.
-
Yeap, downloaded the 64bit driver version from Alienware before the format. (basically all of the drivers i used).
-
and your able to access the web on the wire. just not able to config the router correct?
UPnP enabled by chance? -
Yeap i can access the internet just fine. Only the router's page is giving me problems. And the weird thing is that its not always. Rarely it allows me to login for a few secs. So its really strange.
UPnP setting in router is off. -
and its just this computer? try the others and see if they give you the same problems. if they do or dont its up to you. I would suggest a firmware flash on the router. every once in a while they get funky.
-
Nop other computers on the network can access the router without problems. Problem seems to be limited only on this laptop and only on the ethernet since wifi seems to be able to access the router settings.
But the problem started as soon as i installed the Vista 64. Doubt its a driver issue since internet is working. Im out of ideas. Is there any reason why a router wont work with X version of windows ? -
No. The OS has no effect on the router whatsoever.
-
Hm. So what we have left ?
Its probably not a driver issue since internet is working.
Not a router issue since other laptops on the network can access the router configuration.
Not a laptop issue since wifi actually works. -
OS can have a slight affect but its more of a browswer thing. what browser you runnning? IE x64? firefox?
also. what security settings if IE -
Using Firefox as my default browser. Also tried IE and IE x64 just to make sure it wasnt a firefox issue. I also tried Firefox with the "safe mode" command.
Had the same problem on all three of them. -
Im really bad at problems like that. If i cant find solutions something must be done!
Just formatted the laptop and went back to Vista 32. Problem didnt occur so far. No idea what exactly the problem is yet but at least now its working just fine
Thanks to all that tried to help. -
Sorry you couldn't get it worked out with Vista 64, but at least you know the problem isn't with the router or the network adapter.
Good luck.

Thanks
seems like a conflict between drivers to be honest, although they seem to worked fine. Strange problem.
64bit seemed to be a bit slower too. So i switched without hesitation
Another weird problem (router)
