I am just wondering what a good affordable router for gaming would be. I would like to hook up two xbox 360s and four other computers at the most hooked upi as well. Wireless is definitely needed.
Any suggestions?

Do you need draft-n?
-
Not sure. I can't say I actually know what that is...
-
I don't think he needs it. It's most likely 802.11g he will need. N is the newest version, while g/b/a are the older ones.
-
N isn't going to work with the 360, so it would be a waste. Find a decent G router (wrt-54 GL) and you should be fine.
(I have a 360, 5 laptops, and 2 desktops on my wrt-54g v1) and its worked flawless for years. -
If you want packet optimizing I would suggest the D-link gaming routers. Either wired or wireless it throttles different applications to your needs, and if needed you can always connect a wireless access point to it at a later time. And yeah, G is all you need.

I was planning on plugging the xboxs into the router, and then only using the wireless for the extra computers.

You can do QoS on the linksys routers too...

wrt54gl+dd-wrt

Would the Linksys WRT54G be a good router? And how much change is there between the 54G and the 54GL? Is the 54GL really that much better that it would be worth buying over the 54G?
-
If you flash the wrt54g to dd-WRT firmware, your router will be more then good to go. That firmware is amazing. I have a buffalo I flashed to dd-wrt and it is incredible.

blue68f100 Notebook Virtuoso
He will be restricted with the mini version if only has a WRT54G. If it's a GL model he gets the full feature one.
-
If you want to stay with the default linksys firmware, check out the 54gx. Its MIMO like draft-n. Otherwise, dd-wrt is the awesomes. I have it running on my wrt350n.
-
DGL-4500 easily. DIR-655 is good too (what I have right now). Iv used DD-WRT and no matter how good the firmware is it cant overcome the hardware limitations.

MIMO N router by belkin is for gaming
-
This router from Trendnet would be a great choice. I have a similar model, and with it's built in QoS, it's made for gaming. It worked out better than either the Linksys or the Belkin that I tried first.
Check it out here.

Wrt54gl+dd-wrt.
I agree. I used a GS model (also Linux based) and it's been super stable for years.
The reason to I'd go for the GL over the G model is because you can use one of the community brewed firmwares where as the plain G uses a proprietary one that only Linksys releases updates to (correct me if I'm wrong). These non Linksys firmwares offer more features and IMO are more stable.
Good luck! -
The difference between the G and the GL is the amount of ram and flash, with the G you can only use use the mini version of dd-wrt wich lacks some features...

Looks like my roommate already ordered the WRT54G. Oh well, definitely going to use DD-WRT though. From everything I've read, it solves world hunger, cures cancer, and even makes breakfast. Which is good, since I do love breakfast.
-
It's a solid router. I run the default firmware and while I only have one wired and one wireless computer connected, I think it should be fine for almost anything. Those "gaming" routers are a waste of money.

You can get the full version of DD-WRT on a WRT54G...as long as you have th correct version of the router...I've got v5 so I have the mini version and it performs pretty well.
I also have a version 3 that I'm about to dust off and fire up. Linksysinfo.org is a great site if you want support for Linksys routers.
