I'm not really happy with the speed of my new Time Capsule. Definitely better than my old router but not what I'm expecting. I have all my media on my Time Capsule, and streaming videos more than 720p stutters a bit. I was wondering what's the best settings for Time Capsule? I have all wireless N devices on my network. I currently have the wireless settings set to Automatic - which has selected 802.11a/n - 802.11 b/g/n. The Radio Channel selection is currently set to automatic. Should I have just 802.11 n at 5 ghz for best speeds?
Thanks

Make sure your using WPA2 AES for your security. Set for 11N only if that's all the hardware you have. Switch to the 5ghz if it provides the needed range. 5ghs does not have the range and penetration capabilities as 2.4ghz. TC does not have separate radios for 2.4 and 5ghz, if I recall it's a single radio. If this is correct it does not matter if you split up your bands.

Current time capsules do indeed support dual band 2.4ghz + 5ghz without loss.
Apple introduced the dual band models back around March 09 -

Dual Band does not mean it has 2 seperate radios. Dual Band means 2 freq are supported, 2.4 & 5ghz on one card. Mfg have been putting 2 radios on one chip for some time now to save cost. Some have 3 on a card now.

Two radios

Confirmed it has 2 radios + 1 more?
There is some interesting reading on Smallnetbuilder about the Apple Extreme base. He thinks the radios antennas are swapped causing the poor performance.

I use the newer model 2tb TC and find that it works great within our four floor/level home.
I have never seen low sig on either band.
This has been tested with many business class laptops i always have around. -
Okay since my TC is automating the frequency to transmit at both 2.4 and 5ghz it should already be at the best settings since it supports dual-band, correct? Though even when I stand right beside my TC, I'm only maxing at 130 mbps if that. I know since it's the real world and there are many obstacles that affects the signal and speed on any wireless network. Though I was hoping to get at least 200-300 mbps standing next to it.
Also, the signal isn't what I was hoping, I don't think I've had the connection drop on my MBP, but I have had very poor signal with 5 or less mbps on the furthest areas of my house. I've even had on many occasions the network connection dropping on my Xbox 360 with the 802.11 n network adapter. If this continues to be an issue I might consider buying the Airport express to extend the range of my network. I really hope it doesn't come to this. -
Fact that its broadcasting on both bands has nothing to do with performance or settings being the best. It just means its on- thats it. If you want to achieve speeds close to 300mbps you need to make sure that channel width is set to 40MHz. Usually its a setting available only on the router but Intel cards do have it too- in device manager/properties/advanced tab. So if you use Intel Wi-Fi on any of your devices make sure channel width is also set to 40MHz.
Thats on addition to already mentioned WPA2+AES already mentioned by blue68f100 -
Okay I just enabled 40MHz on my MBP with a Broadcom chipset while in Windows. Should I set my router's security to WPA2 Enterprise? Right now it is currently set to WPA/WPA2 Personal. I don't see any option for AES. If I have it setup as Personal will it be TKIP? On my router I have "Use Wide Channels" enabled I'm assuming that means to set the channel width to 40MHz.

You don't have to enable WPA2 Enterprise (that would require a radius server) although WPA/WPA2 Personal it may mean also TKIP/AES- is there no option for WPA2 Personal-only?

It should not be TKIP, Personal or AES supports the wide 40 channel on 11n.

Yes I might have not been clear- what I meant was exactly that.
Since WPA/WPA2 may mean TKIP or AES it's not the best setting as it has to be AES.
