I'm picking up my new laptop tomorrow, and I want to get the wireless network going, as well.
now, my question is can I purchase an 802.11b/g router such as a Linksys WRT54G or D-Link DI-524, and use it in conjunction with my wired router downstairs, with the new wireless router functioning like a Linksys WAP54G or D-Link DWL-G700AP access point? I'm curious not only because of the price difference, but also it leaves me with more options down the road.
if I can do this, how do I do it? just disable the internal DHCP server and plug the connection to the gateway router into the LAN side of the wireless router?

Will the wireless router is an access point and router all in one. I've you've already got a router downstairs, you can just hook up an access point down there to the existing router. Cheaper alternative.

huh?
I suppose I didn't mention everything here. I already have wired ethernet to my room here on the main floor from the router in the basement, which is then hooked up to the DSL modem. I'm looking to put the wireless router/AP in my room on the main floor so that I have maximum range/signal strength on the main floor. Can I do this, yes/no? -
Yes, that's the way it should work.

yeah, it worked... thanks dr_st
