Just got a new laptop with Intel 4965 card installed. Looking for a draft=n router to take advantage of this but am slightly concerned about reports of imcompatibility with routers despite also being drat-n
Which draft-n routers have people been sucessfully running with this card? And what kind of results have they got?
Thanks for any info.

I do not have that specific card, but i have a few laptops that all had different Wireless LAN's and they all work with my Netgear Draft N router and I am very satisfyed with it. VERY LIGHT too----Anyway, I have heard that, but a friend of mine has a D-Link router, a Netgear PCI Card for his desktop and a Trendnet Card in his notebook, and they all work at N-Speed with no problem.

SmallNetBuilder website has good reviews of all the current Draft-N routers. I am planning to buy the D-Link DIR 655. Here is the review http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30087/96/
I would like to know how the Intel 4965 interacts with it, but both are supposed to meet the Draft-N 2.0 spec. -
That one looks nice, the 3 antennas are good, apperently if it doesnt have 3, it gives you 300 Mlbs. but is not as fast some how, and not as good signal strenth, so good router!

We bought a DLINK Extreme N DIR-655. What a great router; so easy to set up. I recently "pimped" my husband's Dell E1705 notebook with an Intel 4965 card. He's consistently getting 144 mps; don't know if there are some settings we need to adjust, but before that we were at 54 mps. (Pre-pimped numbers). I wholeheartedly recommend just about any DLink product out there with few exceptions. Good luck

gotta agree with lawmom-
I bought the DLINK DIR-655 and am EXTREMELY happy with it.
I had a Linksys WRT300N that was nothin but problems,
also what I did was go to Wi-Fi Alliance and checked them out:
here's their list of N draft 2 certified
http://certifications.wi-fi.org/wbc...te_to=&x=30&y=18&selected_certifications[]=33
the DIR-655 is draft 2 certified:smile: -
To lawmom,
144Mbps huh?
Dang, I'm 15 feet away from mine and I'm showing 130Mbps
but then again I've got it set to N/G mixed cuz of another lappy here.
but yup,
WAY better than 54Mbps!!!

I had the I Intel 4945 adapter in my last pc and even with a Belkin N router I was only getting 54Mbps, but I returned that laptop back to Dell because it had other problems also.

Yes, this is what I was concerned about.
I have read reviews where mag's have tested supposedly compatible draft-n routers and found them only running in 11g mode with the Intel 4965. They seemed to find that once you connected the manufacturers own adapter card to the notebook you can get 11n without a problem - but most laptops come with either the Intel card or some other generic one.
I'm sure in the long run firmware update should be able to iron out the snags but I don't want to gamble on something that may not ever work.
Since we have people who are getting proper 11n connection I feel that the D-Link 655 is therefore looking like a fave.
Thanks for the feedback. -
I have the dir655 as well and I can only connect at 54mbps with my Intel 4965 with WAP enabled. I am only able to connect at 130mbps without any encryption enabled.
How are you guys able to connect at 130/144mbps? Any special configurations? -
Use WPA2
This is directly from f.a.q. for the dir-655.
"Enabling WEP on a DRAFT N connection will cap the speed to 54mbps. To gain the Draft N possible speeds, WPA2 is recomended."
 -
Also,
From the D-Link tech guys via the D-link forums, if the router sees b/g devices on the network, it shifts down to their fastest speed(54Mbps for g). I am running N only atm. Did have it set to mixed g/n and was taking a serious performance hit,not just down to 54Mbps, more like 25Kbps downloads! and was told the Intel 4965 is a bit quirky, and to set the channel width in the router to 20Mhz only-not auto, which is default. Seems auto channel width in the router and the Intel 4965 don't play nice.Working GREAT now even when g devices are on it. I'm extremely pleased with it.
 -
I also have some device that use wireless b. In that case, is the maximum speed that I can expect from my router in mixed mode... 54mbps? I am not using WEP because of the incompatibility isuue, I didn't see anywhere that WAP had incompatibility issue as well.

I'm no technician
lol , here's the D-link DIR-655;link.
http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DIR-655
and since my issue was resolved by adjusting the channel width to 20Mhz only, I still have fast speed and task manager in Vista shows the card speed as 130Mbps.:smile:and this is directly from their f.a.q.
"Note: Enabling WEP on a DRAFT N connection will cap the speed to 54mbps. To gain the Draft N possible speeds, WPA2 is recomended. However WPA will also work."
They also have excellent forums, and although the tech responded in the forum with that info I gave, my router is still working excellent. -
not sure about b devices, don't have any, sorry I couldn't help more
,
I'd check out their support link and forums for specific issues about their products. -
Alemaker, thanks for the reply. I'll try to follow the suggestions on the FAQ.

I have 144mb speed with my Belkin N1 stock settings
