I am trying to set up a network between my desktop and my new notebook so I can transfer my old files to my notebook. Here is the setup for my internet.
Ethernet Port from Wall---->Linksys Router
From the Linksys Router I have an ethernet cord connected to my 1394 Port on my desktop.
My notebook picks up signal from the Router and connects to the internet wirelessly.
If I try and set up a wireless network, my desktop receives an error message because it has no wireless in it.
If I try and set up a normal network, my notebook says the Local Area Connection is unplugged and it cannot create a network.
Neither of the computers recognizes the other. What should I do? Thanks.

You have an ethernet cable plugged into your firewire port? Maybe that's your problem. Heh, just kidding. I'll assume you meant your ethernet jack, although it's really irrelavent. Have you tried running the network setup wizard (in control panel) on both computers? Make sure you allow it to configure for file and printer sharing. Then select a few folders from the desktop to share (right click on them, select the sharing tab and check the box to share this folder). Those folders should appear in My Network Places on both computers. I have pretty much the same set up, and that's what I did to share files.
Edit - re-reading your post, I think you've already tried this. On the page where you get that error saying a Local Area Connection is unplugged, there should be a check box to ignore these connections and continue on. Does that help? -
on your desktop, make sure the Local Area Network is enabled, and connected. on your laptop, make sure there is some sort of connection to your router (wireless, or wired). then make sure that both computers are on the same workgroup. this can be looked up/changed from right-click properties of "My Computer." Under the tab "Computer NamE" the last item is to change the workgroup. Make sure they are the same.
From there, all shared items should be seen from My Network Places, or from there, View workgroup computers -
dont forget to enable file and print sharing
-
I made the workgroup the same name and the computers still don't recognize each other. I made the original workgroup name on my laptop. When going to view workgroup computers on my desktop, it says that the workgroup "is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."
-
this may sound funny, but did you reset after making the changes?
-
yeah i restarted after i changed the workgroup names
-
Ok well now my notebook recognizes my desktop, but I still have restricted access from the workgroup from my desktop. And when I click on my desktop on my notebook's workgroup, it says that the desktop is not accessible.

Hey, I just learned how to do this about a month ago. I know what you are talking about cuz I send files from my notebook to my PC. Bear with me...it might hard for me to explain it in text..but here i go!^^;
SO you have your computer names and workgroup names eh? Now to actually connect them together, open My Computer then goto Map Network Drive.
Choose any available letter drive you wish then for the next list (Folder), whatever the Share Name you gave the folder on your desktop, enter it like this...
//COMPUTERNAME/SHARENAMEFOLDER
Then it should work^^
if you don't know what I mean by share name is, right click on the file or folder you wish to share and then go to the Sharing tab and right there in the middle window check "Share this Folder/File on the Network". Now choose a Share Name for it and then apply it. -
I'm so confused. What do you name in the "SHARENAMEFOLDER". I don't have any shared folder set up or anything. And do you do this on each computer?
-
you have to share a folder in order for it to be visible to other users on the network.
here are things to check:
1. same workgroup?
2. file/print sharing enabled?
3. folder shared from the sharing computer?
in addition, what OSs are we talking about?
(note: if one is Home and one is Pro, then i had real trouble connecting until i enabled simple file sharing on the Pro machine) -
ok well i figured out how to connect the two computers! finally, i realized it was my firewall (zonealarm) not letting each connect to the other. i turned off the firewall and sure enough it worked. is there a way to connect to each other without turning off the firewall. like make it so only each computer has access to each other but still have the firewall on? they both have the same IP addresses so I can't use that as a factor to give access.

They can't have the exact same IP address...if they do that could be a problem. You should look up on some zone alarm forums on how to do it. If you are running behind a router, then it should be the equivelant to a hardware firewall. -
well i looked up the ip address and they are the same. i figured it was because they both are coming from the same router.

Well their Gateway address should be the same, but the IP should be different within the network.
If you are using a website to test your IP you will show the same IP because it should be the IP of the gateway/router. -
I'm not sure if you have the free or pro version of ZA, but it shouldn't matter that the IP's are the same (even though they shouldn't be). You'll need to add those IP's to your trusted zone (Firewall, then the Zones tab on the free version), and then set your trusted zone security to medium. That should allow them to share files back and forth through the firewall.

Well in Networking for you to have 2 computers with the same IP address is almost impossible unless you assign them yourself. Not only that, but neither computer would be able to communicate with the network because of this conflict.
That is why I was wondering if he was checking the IP on a website because that will show the Default Gateway address.
-
Yeah, I agree they shouldn't be the same. I was just replying to the original poster's comment that "they both have the same IP addresses so I can't use that as a factor to give access."
rickt, if you find out that the IP address you're looking at is the one for the router, one way to find your computer's IP is to open up a command prompt (Start-->Run then type cmd) and type "ipconfig". This will list your network connections, which ones are currently connected, and the IP addresses for those. Use that info and set up Zone Alarm so that IP is in the trusted zone like I mentioned in my previous post. -
it is absolutely impossible for two computers to have the same address on the same network.
-
though they might appear to be the same, save a variation on the last digit (***.***.***.0 vs ***.***.***.1)
-
i was using a website to check the ip. edit:i just learned that i could type ipconfig into the command prompt and it would give me it. alright, thanks for all your help!
