Recently, I've been having strange connectivity problems with my Gateway CX2724. Network connections are now ungodly slow. I'm connecting with integrated 54g wireless, but the same results occur with 100 Ethernet. I should point out that I recently installed the KB884020 patch, which I need for remote VNC and File Sharing over SSH into my server. I believe that that patch has something to do with the problem, although removing it didn't help. I also recently installed the Microsoft Loopback Adapter, and have since removed it to see if that caused the problem, which it apparently did not.
Transferring a 3.9GB folder over SMB to my server took over 9 minutes. FTPing the same file to the same server from the same server took a matter of seconds. The only network function affected is SMB, everything else is fine... Any ideas?

I should have added that I have restarted both the Server and the CX2724 and have tried transferring files using smb to another server with the same slow effect.

I don't think it is possible to transfer 3.9gb of files via ftp in matter of seconds especially when you are using a 54g wireless.
54Mbps = roughly 6.75mb/sec
3900mb / 6.75= 577 seconds
577/60 = 9.63 mins
Which is about right if it transfer via SMB around 9 mins.
For 100Mbps Ethernet:
100Mbps = 12.5mb/sec
3900 / 12.5= 312 seconds
312/60= 5.2 mins
The ftp transferred so quickly is probably because it didn't overwrite the file. It just resumed it. -
Did you delete the file from the server after your VNC test to test FTP transfer speed? If not, the server already had the file and didn't need to transfer it.
-
Sorry, that was a major typo, 3.9 MB not GB... I wouldn't have expected 3.9GB to transfer in under 6-7 minutes at the least.
-
I'm confused about where that needs to be applied. On the CX2724, those flags are set to 0, so I'm not sure if that's the problem.
-
I should point out that the server I'm trying to transfer to is a Debian Linux server running samba, but the same problem occurs when trying to transfer to a genuine Windows server.
-
I've restarted a couple of times, but so far, I haven't gotten any different results. It's painfully slow to do anything. I'm going to be reformatting unless anyone has any further suggestions...

What is the speed of your wired connections. Have you tested that way. You may find it's your server that is slow or just the 100baseT network. Persons that are move huge files generally spend the money for gigabit lan. That way you have 30+MB/sec speed. Like moving a 700meg file in 15-20 sec. Remember on 100bastT you max FTP is ~10.5MB/s.
-
I tried to move 3.9 MB which took over 9 minutes on 100baseT. Using a different computer connecting to the same server, the same thing transfered in a matter of seconds. The problem only occurs using SMB to any server I use. The web is snappy as is using ftp to any server. I'm doubting it's a speed issue. To prove it that my connection is pretty fast, I did a test www.speedtest.net, which said my internet connection is 26mbps down and 2mbps up.

I was going to reformat, but then I remembered my backup storage is on my server, which I normally would use SMB to access... Any fixes? I think I'll buy another external when the Sunday sales come out, if there's one cheap, unless there's something I can do

Setup ftp to your server.
