Is there such a thing as a standalone DSL modem in this day and age? I had DSL about 10 years ago and had a standalone modem at that time (which plugged into a separate router), but most ISPs nowadays give out these cheap and crappy modem/router hybrid devices (the ISP I'm considering uses 2Wire).
If such a thing still exists, what, exactly, is the technical term that I should use to ask for one when I order the service?

They're just called DSL modems. I have a 2Wire with Wireless-G built in and it works fine.

Standalone DSL(dry-loop dsl) means no telephone service(voice) bundled with the Digital Subscriber Line (DSL).

There are both combo devices not standalone modems.
Standalone modem has two ports- one for WAN and one for LAN. If it has a switch and/or wireless than it's a combo.
That said I don't see a point in avoiding modems with wired routers- it's easiest to but one and use an external router connetce3d to it.
DSL modems?
