My girlfriend just got Comcast Hi-Speed, and I just bought a WRT54G from Amazon so we can have wireless at her casa. The only question I have is does the Comcast modem "marry" to the MAC address of the first computer attached to it?
-
you could always clone the MAC ad.
-
Yup. That's why I got the WRT54G in case I needed to clone her laptop's LAN MAC address.
But that doesn't answer my question as to whether Comcast modems "marry" to the first computer attached to them on activation. -
Well, I don't think so, I've used Comcast before and never encountered any MAC problems.

YES (in my area), If you change modems you have to call them. You can clone a mac address in to the router, or call and have them reset to the new one. If the original setup was without a router then the mac address is the pc nic card.

Thanks blue68f100. I've been reading conflicting reports as to this practice online. Guess it's Comcast local policies, rather than a nationwide corporate policy. Think I'll play it safe and just clone her MAC address to the WRT54G right off the bat.

The only time it would not be the pc would be if the router was in the circuit when the account was setup. But the last time I tried one I was instructed to remove the router.

I read a post on the DSLReports forum of a guy who tried to set up his Comcast modem with his wireless router attached, and it wouldn't. He had to set it up with his computer, then attach his router afterwards.
Does Comcast Remember MAC Addresses?
