Does anyone know any great web hosting service I can register to? There's so many out there and I can't decide.
It's a non-business personal website.
-
Godaddy is easy cheap and popular.
-
the term "popular" usually = "overrated" if you know what I mean. Is there something similar or better than godaddy?
-
Ill recommend Godaddy aswell. Im very happy with their price and service.
Theres also Site5.com, im not sure what sort of plan you need though so look around. Some will offer unlimited bandwidth.. -
I dont think you can beat the reliability and name of godaddy honestly. I renewed my site for the 3rd year with them now. Never had one issue. I am actually about to bump up the service to a higher plan now. Overall i have no complaints.
-
Godaddy is fine. I used them for a while. They are inexpensive, and have never treated me bad. If you prefer paying more, Network Solutions is good as well.
-
Ok Godaddy it is. Which one should I go with? economy plan or grid hosting? Or is grid hosting just an enhancement or add-on to a plan?
-
Economy is more than enough imo. Grid will bump its price soon, and scew you over at 20 a month. So unless your gonna get millions of hits a month, go with economy. Im riding it with a fairly low load with 3000ish a day hits.
-
Ok thanks everyone for helping me decide
-
what type of service are you going to run on it? also what box are you getting, linux or windows?
for me im using the linux server with joomla 1.0 software (too scared to break the site by upgrading to 1.5) -
I'm not too sure. Sorry I'm a newbie and have never done this sort of stuff before. Never did try the Linux OS before.
-
Well really you will never touch it. It just depends on what you are gonna install to run your backend. Joomla, wordpress, vbullitin etc. Somethings like windows others require linux.
Unless your just gonna write a simple html site? -
It's a database containing sheet music files and what not for people to download and upload.
How many payments do I have to make to get one up and running? There's the Host plan fee and there's another fee just to register a domain. Any more? -
The hosting fee and the domain fee should be it. You pay for domains on an annual basis and hosting fees on a monthly basis, unless you prepay for 1+X years and 1+X months, respectively.
The above is assuming the domain and hosting are the only products/services you signed up for. If you opted for extra features, such as advertising, you will incur additional fees. Godaddy will tell you about those fees as/if you enroll for them. -
There's so many "extras" on their site. It got a bit more confusing as I venture deeper into their site lol. *Asks self* "Do I need this or do I not?"
For those who are running a website, may I ask what option(s) did you go with besides the hosting plan and domain register (as these 2 are required for getting it up and running)? What do you think is worth adding on or is necessary? I see all these "privacy protection", "protected registration", "email plans", "make it 48 months" plan, etc. -
I just ignore all the extras. Privacy protection is good, but never has been needed by me. It will prevent your personal information from being displayed to anyone who wants it. So that will prevent junk mail, both in your physical mailbox and email box. It will also be handy if you happen to have a stalker.
The protected registration, is for two purposes from Goddady. The company seems to suggest they offer you a grace period before deactivating your service, if you failed to pay your bill. Also, a free feature you can turn on or off at any point, to prevent the domain name from being transferred away from Godaddy. This is to prevent theft of the domain name.
Read more about all that here:

I wouldn't bother with an email address at your domain unless you're a business, or have a really awesome domain name.
I think the "make if 48 months" part is referring to special pricing when prepaying for extra years. Since you'll likely want to hold onto the domain name for more than a year, it's worth it if the savings is decent. It usually is. I wouldn't recommend prepaying for web hosting (by more than the compulsory one-month) until you have your site built and up. This way, you'll preserve an option to switch hosts, without losing money, if the package you signed up for doesn't meet your needs. -
Additionally you might want to choose for private registration so that your name and address arent publicly made when a whois is done on your domain. I think its 9 bucks well spent. But really that it - domain and hosting.
-
The privacy extra doesnt really make your information private, theres still ways around it.
Just make a ghost email and put that down in the detail info.
Btw, anyone else find logging onto the godaddy website a little slow? -
Yeah its been slow. They have been ddos attacked daily for a while now.
-
Don't care for godaddy--at least not the way it used to be...unfriendly user control panel and there were occassional issues installing some packages.
I use lunarpages now and have been happier. Also, buying a webpackage gives you a free domain.
Either way, have a plan first. If you are going to use joomla, for example, go to the joomla site and see if people encounter problems with your webhost when it comes to setup.
But decide what you are going to do first--idea than webhost -
I think I got my ideas planned out. Have it all down on paper and everything. Just need to know how to use dreamweaver... Once this step is complete I can register and host. I'll remember to rep all of you guys who've helped once I get it up and running.
-
PM me if your interested. I work for a hosting company.

I would definitely go with godaddy, hands down. I have a lot of domains hosted with them, and their webhosting service is great, with a pretty decent price tag.
I no longer use them for my actual webhosting; I needed a more powerful webhost (I use hostgator now, which is also awesome, BTW).
Yes, it MAY be possible to do some googling and find a cheaper host, but it probably isn't worth it, since their service and tech support wont be nearly as good as godaddy!
Hope this helps.

I've used 1and1.com since 2006 without any problems. I host a forum and a blog there.
-
anyone having issue setting up subdomains with godaddy?
-
not here. whats the issue your having?
-
You can't go wrong with 'The Planet' for hosting, or UK2.net for 10TB/month data, Lunarpages are good for cheap Cpanel hosting but not much else.
Godaddy I found too awkward to host our site on, dedicated hosting is the way to go. -
Using a dedicated server when shared hosting would suffice is like cracking a walnut with a sledgehammer.
-
Ive set up a few subdomains about a month ago and a few days ago to match my folders but when i try access a file say www.download.flipfire.net/something.zip . it gives me an error
-
You also I think need to setup a DNS pointer for download.flipfire.net need to point to the same IP address as flipfire.net.
So the DNS server know when it sees download.flipfire.net to go to flipfire.net and your server will then sort out the directories.
Hope this helps, this is how I setup my subdomains on The Planet server and setup the DNS pointers at Enom (My DNS server) -
Thats the thing, it automatically made a pointer on my DNS list but it still doesnt work...
