Hi guys,
New here.
Would like to seek an opinion.
I am looking to buy a laptop.
However, it only comes with a Megabit network port (am assuming it is Ethernet 10/100)
Should I get it or buy a laptop with a Gigabit port?
My uses are:
1) Connecting to the internet via LAN Cable (internet speed is 200Mbps)
2) I do not intend to transfer files between devices regularly
3) Maybe transfer videos (maybe max of 7gb) within my own home network
My Concerns:
1) Will the Megabit port limit my download speed for my internet, meaning I will not get to fully enjoy the 200Mbps?
2) How does having a Megabit port affect the speed of a 7gb file transfer within my own home network as compared to a Gigabit port?
Hope to hear from you, sorry for the lengthy post.
Please let me know if you require more info from me.
Thank you!

Yes and yes. Your network connection will be capped at 100Mbps, this will affect both transfers on the network and internet.

Internet connection is my main concern.
So, going by your logic, a 100Mbps connection will be fine?
Thank you. -
If your internet is 200mbps, using 100 will cap you at 100.
So it depends what ur internet service is and if your router support 1000mbps. -
I would not say that. If you truly have a 200Mbps internet connection, then you will get less than half that counting overhead in. Heck, i get faster transfer through wireless than what you can get with on a 100Mbps ethernet connection. I don't know what the laptop manufacturer was thinking seriously, who puts antiquated Megabit ethernet in a brand new laptop. What laptop are you buying, did you misread the specs. Also Baii is right, if your router doesn't support gigabit ethernet it won't matter anyways.

It is a Lenovo u410, given free with a broadband plan sign up.
They switched the ports. Guess that explains why it is free. -
From what i can see, the U410 comes with gigabit ethernet as it should. Where did you get the specs and do you have the full model #?

200Mbps internet is quite nice to have, you should utilize as much as you can from that opportunity
-
I really doubt you are going to be seeing the full 200mbps. 100mbps will be fine for wired, and if you want faster you can use wireless N 450mbps, which should be able to saturate your internet connection even if it truly a full 200mbps.

Three stream Wi-Fi does not provide real life speeds close to 200mbps so that's not a solution.
