In my dorm there is only one lan port but we need to so I am thinking of getting a lan splitter. Are they effective?

I would say to get a cheap switch/hub, but your university might have a problem with pulling too many IP addresses. Safer route that is least likely to get you in trouble with a university is a router, with the MAC cloned to one computer with wireless shut off so that it doesn't look like a router.
Why clone? Lots of universities do not allow personal wireless routers for security, liability, and interference purposes, and actively check for the presence of any. This includes monitoring wireless signals and checking MAC addresses for typical router MACs. -
routers are allowed here! whats the cheapest router?

I have seen wired routers on flreabay and online from $5.00 to 20.00
heres a nice one on Amazon
Amazon.com: Linkskey LKR-604 - Router + 4-port switch - Ethernet, Fast Ethernet - external: Electronics -
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
With cheap routers you're getting what you pay for, quite literally. Just sayin.
