Does anyone here game wirelessly. I do, and I get constant lag spikes every so often (most times it is just horrible to play on). I am running a cable modem, to a linksys vonage RT31P2 adapter, to a belkin PRE-N router, to this intel 2915 adapter, and also to my54G desktop linksys adapter WMP54G.
it is dreadful. i get lag spikes too often, and most times it is just not playable. I am thinking of running a cat5e cable outside my house to my room so i can play wired.
(also thinking of getting a switch so i can connect all my computers..desktop and 1 laptop..soon to be 2 laptops).
is it always like this with wireless? or is it a setting that must be adjusted?
will be testing this laptop wired soon to see if it is any better, so i will be reporting back..

*edit* this should of been in the networking section...

I game wirelessly on my Sager (Intel Pro2915).
I found Call of Duty 2 to be terrible on wireless . . my desktop is wired, so its fine.
I have no problems with CS:S though, I usually have a 10-15 ping on most servers.
I also have no issues with BF2 or BattleFront 2. Maybe CoD 2 was just bad today . . I'll test it more later.
On your router, set the channel to 11, see if that helps any.
Also, if you haven't already done so, there's a big update for the Intel software for your card avaliable for d/l on Intel's site.

it is definitely wireless...cs/css/bf2 all work with no lag whatsoever..now i just need to run the wire to my room.
was set to 11 already, so i dont know what else it could be...i know the vonage takes away a certain amount of bandwidth, and if i put the vonage router first it it bad for gaming...if i put the belkin router first, it isnt soo bad, but it definitely doesnt play like when it is wired. my parents need the phone, so it looks like im going to have to run the wire outside my house... shouldnt be too much work.
thanks..

Wired is always faster, I try to hook mine up to an Ethernet whenever possible. But my laptop is normally away from my router, hence why I use wireless.
Be sure to do that wireless software:

One thing about wireless . . . I like Wireless Internet, but I hate wireless kb's and mice. Lagggg galore, even the RF ones. -
Wired is usually much faster, BUT, with my atheros card I can game wirelessly with the same rates as being wired into my network. REALLY~!
Soooooooooooooooooo, as I have been preaching in the recent past, go get yourself an Atheros card. I am in no way affiliated with anyone or any company associated with the selling of these cards. I just freakin' love it to death. I don't have to worry about where I'm going to sit to get a strong signal.
For example, in my school, York University, there is a place called York Lanes, it's pretty much our Mall within the school. There's a coffee shop there that I frequent, a lot of my friends work there. With my Intel 2200a/b/g and the Intel 2915 in my friend's Z63A, I had to sit in this corner table just to get a signal, and so did everyone else, except some MAC users.
After getting my Atheros 5600XS I can sit anywhere~! I can even walk to the washroom with my laptop in my bag, to do my business, and come back to my table and it never disconnects. I've even walked pretty much across campus with my laptop on and it didn't disconnect. I was amazed.
I had winamp running on a korean radio station and I guess I forgot to mute it, but anyways, I was walking over to another building to meet my friend and she was like, "What is that?", "What's what?" I said. She says, "I hear music, you FOB (fresh off the boat), listening to your korean music again eh?". I was like wtf? I'm not listening to anything. Then I realized I had my laptop on and I forgot to mute it.
WOW.
Cheers,

werd, i also used Atheros drivers on my desktop (wireless-G D-Link, Cable 6MBps connection) and gaming was flawless for the most part. Our house is 2500+ sq.ft so you'd never get a 100% connection, usually 50-60%.
However most of the online games I played were CS or GunZ, of which i only joined the fastest servers. As far as network speed, disconnects/lag weren't a problem. My dad invested in an extended range antenna, and my wireless card was **** fast (D-Link Air Plus Extreme-G) for my uses.
With a cat5e cable, my network speeds and online gameplay was virtually the same. maybe a 100-300Kbps difference at the most. Of course if my sister, mom, and dad were also online with there computers it would slow down depending on bandwidth usage. -
Oh I forgot to mention I have the same router as you PBcustom.

chaz i am going to give these drivers a try..although i am 89% sure it has to do with having a vonage router stealing my precious bandwidth for the phone..(bah who needs to talk to people on a house phone!). i think i am able to go wired soon (maybe this coming weekend), but i probably will still get the atheros for school and for when i go upstate.
thanks for the help all
