Hi.
I just installed CSS recently(newbie), but for some wierd reason i have higher latency than my neighbor which uses the same service provider, ecept i pay for the 1mb conection and he pays for the 512kb.
i have latency of 130-140- and he has 80-90.
---------------------------------------------
By the way, why is it called a 1mb conection, when i am downloading stuff it goes as high as 115kb.
-----------------
What solution do i have to better my internet connection.
O by the way, i have wireless conection, but my Desktop is connected with ethernet.
-
His PC may be faster than yours?
-
no i don't currently have his specs, his desktop is older than mine, i know for a fact my machine is twice as faster than him, ecept ram, we both use 2gb
-
While you may have the same provider, you packets are not routed the same way thus the latency difference.
About the downloading speed, you have a 1mb/s connection but the computer will give you the speed in mB/s(note the "B" vs "b";1 Byte=8 bits) so 115kB*8=920kb, that confirms that you have a 1mb connection. -
Thanks didn't understand it that well.
Bumping, i still am having trouble, The problem is that i am having trouble with Steam playing online, i use to play Team fortress 2 without any problem, until recently i am having terrible lag, even if my latency says about 140(i use to played with no problem) it lags bad, skiping everywhere. I think the internet is just fine.
So far, i cleaned the spyware, and did some tuneup, cleaned temp files and registry, right now i am doing a defragment, but if this persist i feel that i must re-install windows.
I am worried, that if i re-install windows will have to install all my games again since it screws with the registry. -
Is the increased latency showing up when you're running on the wireless connection? If so, that's almost certainly because there's either a problem with your wireless router or increased interference in your immediate vicinity, such as a neighbor installing a new wireless router that uses the same or an adjacent channel to the channel your router uses.
-
even though i am using a wireless router, my desktop is conected directly with ethernet(wireless are for the laptops) and the neighbor are not near enought to be able to interfere.
-
Yes, but that didn't exactly answer the question - can I infer from your answer that you installed CSS on your desktop, and that that's the system that's experiencing the lag you're concerned about, and that it's not one of the laptops that connects wirelessly?
If so, does this lag occur when the laptops are also connected to the internet connection via the wireless router?
Also, is the desktop wired into one of the four LAN ports on the back of the wireless router? -
The lag happens, even if the laptop are not connected.
The desktop is the one having the problem.
the desktop is wired to one of the 4 port lan of the wireless router.
Also i have installed CSS and TF2, both have same problem. -
Ok, do you notice any lag on anything else, such as downloading graphic-intensive webpages?
-
as far, as i know, i haven't noticed any problem on other websites, or when downloading.
What website would you recomend me to test it on that has graphic-intensive -
Just because you have a "faster" connection does not mean you will get lower latencies. Latencies come from many factors, but the main one is how many people are using that line at the time you are. Your 1mb connection maybe more popular than his 512 one and therefore has more network congestion which increases the network collisions and repeat sending of packets resulting in increased latency timings. If your neighbor had the same company and same plan as you then it would be a apple to apple comparison, but right now your comparing apples to oranges.
What are your pings to google? Run a ping set of about 25 and report your average times here as well as the number of failures (if any). Before that, i doubt theres anything we can do to help you.
Getting higher latency than my neighbor
