i have an old netgear router, model mr 314 that is 802.11b and i just got a NEW laptop that has a newer wifi card, an intel 4965 AGN.
are they supposed to work?
the reason i ask is that i am able to get them connected UNTIL i restart the laptop, then it won't work anymore.
to make it work again i have to DISABLE the WAP (data encryption) in the "wireless network connection properties window" of my wifi card, then i can connect to the router again.
BUT... the weird thing is... when i connect to the router it still asks me for the wap "network key" that i just disabled and when i go back there to check the WAP in the "wireless network connection properties window" the WAP is again active.
are these two techonologies supossed to work? a B router with a GN card? or is this a GLITCH? or is my wifi card on my new laptop BAD?
please help, i am going insane! thank you for your advise![]()

Well...802.11G IS backwards compatible w/ 802.11B hardware so it shouldn't be acting up. As of right now...i'm thinking u should go into 'Device Manager' under Control Panel. Find ur WiFi Card, right click it, select properties and look for an 'Advanced' tab. You should be able to change the wireless mode in there somewhere. Change it so that it's set to something to the effect like 802.11b/g/n.

@makaveli72 - just got your message and found the settings you told me. my wifi card was already auto set for the the A B and G modes...
i changed it around and placed it back to the A B and G mode...
i will give it a try again and see if this will work.
so... just to double check things here with you... my NEW WIFI card of my NEW laptop then SHOULD work with OLDER ROUTERS that are B?
thank you very much for your time. -
Yes (10 chars)

The 4965 is definately compatable with "B". Could be a software/driver or antenna problem.

Make sure that you save the settings when you do some changes in the router. Also in the wireless adapter you must then declare no authentication or whatever and say ok.
Now, clearly explain what is the problem, do you see the network components? Do you have internet?
What are the computers attached to the network and what OS are they using? -
hello friends... sorry it took me a while to post back the results.
ok, so i tried what the 1st poster told me to do in regards of my issue (change the wifi settings) and it did not work.
so i decided just for the heck to uninstall the drivers and get the newest ones from the INTEL site... and guess what? that did it! wohooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...
thank you all for replying. you guys/girls are the best -
I also got the latest driver yesterday and so for so good.
HELP, will old router 802.11b works w/ new intel 4965AGN card?
