Hello. I've had a little trouble with my notebook's wireless assistant. (HP DV6119US)
Yesterday, the wireless worked just fine, but then when I came back to use it again (woke it up after being put in sleep mode), the wireless stopped working. Two things: One, I can no longer open HP Wireless Assistant. Two, regardless of whether I switch wireless on or off, the light stays amber (indicating the wireless is off). Looked at my wireless router and internet connection, but the two work just fine.
I've had this laptop since October 2006, and this is just now happening. Does anyone know what's going on or how this can be fixed? (BTW, I've had Windows XP Media Center ever since, so it can't be Vista-related)

Re-install the Wireless LAN drivers and uninstall HP wireless assistant.
HP wireless assistant is obsolete in your case becasue your model doesnt come with bluetooth. The assistant only use is to turn off BT/Wireless independently. -
Which of these drivers should I download? I went to the HP website and did a search and came across a bunch of Broadcom drivers.
Sorry for asking so many questions. It's just that this is the first time this has ever happened, and I don't want to download and install the wrong thing. -
I can only see one...

Not your exact symptom, but close enough. -
No good. I've installed the drivers, uninstalled Wireless Assistant, restarted the computer a few times, but the light remains amber.
I probably should have mentioned this earlier, but when I checked for a connection in Network Connections, it had Local Area Connection and 1394 Connection, but no wireless connection. It USED to have a wireless connection, but now it doesn't.
I looked online, and I found a lot of people having the same problems I've been having. Think I should call HP? -
Your wireless card might have seized then. Double check your Device Manager if exists there.
Yes you should call HP and run the diagnostics. Hopefully they will just send you a replacement wireless card -
I've called HP earlier. They said nothing about sending me a wireless card (I'm not even sure where it's suppose to go), but they did tell me to send the laptop to them and they'll take care of it.
Meanwhile, I did a Google search of these wireless cards and came across a few (between $20-$80). I still think it would be best if HP took care of it. What do you think? -
Yes its best if HP took care of it, besides its free this way
If your out of warranty, then you can take care of it yourself. Replacing the wireless card is simple. -
If its a DV6000 they may have to go in and also replace the MB and/or Wireless card so sending it in would most likely be the best option. Always check out your support page for your NB http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...77&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3257768&lang=en

Hopefully still under warranty
-
I checked out that site, and it sure enough was that first option under DV6000 series.
Well, I put the laptop in the mail today. Hopefully, HP will contact me if the motherboard is the problem.
I plan on having this notebook for one more year. I've heard that lots of people with the same laptop have the same problem. I haven't had ANY other problems with this machine, though (would not have gotten through these first two years of college without it
). But, when I move on to something else, should I look out for another brand?
(OFF-TOPIC: I bought this laptop in late September 2006 from Circuit City for $900 (financial aid kicked in for me that day
). It only had 1 GB of memory and a 60-GB hard drive. Was I ripped off???)
-
The early models had the mobo flaw. Your quite lucky yours lasted for this long.
If the motherboard is the problem, they might not be able to replace it due to its age. No replacement parts. So instead they could possibly replace the whole notebook/motherboard with something a little better.
Cross your fingers.
-
I shall keep them crossed. Thank you so much for helping me out.
Erm, one last thing ... you wouldn't happen to know how long this'll take, do you? I plan to go on vacation in a couple of weeks (the week after the fourth of July). -
Sorry to double-post, but I got the laptop back today. The receipt said...
The following items were repaired/replaced:
System Board
Thermal Pad
Bios
There you go. Wireless works again, and no more problems.
-
As I said before, good you had a warranty
-
I had the same problem with my hp v3000.
after updating bios and wireless driver, deleting hp wireless assitant and disabling the 1394-connection + restarting wireless adapter came back and is workling fine since. Don't know why but wireless- and 1394-connection seemed to have a conflict. -

Thanks -
You should check my first post and if your nb falls under the service program the best options would be to give HP a call about it.

I had the exact same problem with my HP laptop. I took it to my local computer repair shop. They said the problem is with the motherboard. It does not supply enough power to the wireless card. I will call HP on Monday.
