Hey,
for anyone who knows what Hamachi is
I'm using Vista 64 bit Home Premium SP1 on my gateway laptop, and the person I'm trying to connect to is using XP professional SP3 on his desktop. We're both using Hamachi 1.0.3.0 (the latest version). (We've also tried using older version of Hamachi (1.0.0.56))
The hamachi adapter is set to highest priority on both machines.
We've both tried hosting, and we can create networks and join, and we can see each other's computer in network places, and can file share and can chat.
The problem is I can ping him but he can't ping me, it times out. We cannot see each other in games.
I cannot see how this is a firewall problem, as we've tried completely turning off all firewalls: windows, 3rd party and router, assigning permissions, etc with no difference
Plus, my friend used his laptop which has 32-bit Vista Business to connect using Hamachi, and everything went fine, but the laptops not as good so we want to use the XP machine.
Is there any work around so that I can use my Vista 64 bit machine to connect to a XP machine? or has anyone got it to work?
i'd really appreciate if someone can help.
Any suggestions?
thanks

Hey I have the exact same problem.
Does anyone know anything about it, what could be causing it or anything, or any workarounds or alternative VPN solutions?
I've tried openVPN but that seems to complex, and Wippien doesn't seem to work on x64 Vista.
Any help would be great as I can't find any solutions. -
Firewall is the only thing i can think of.
In the past, if one user cant ping but the other can then something is blocking the ping packets -
Firewall is defiantly not the problem, i think it's safe to say we ruled that one out, as i said we did everything for assigning permissions to shuting down all firewalls, both software and hardware, both windows and Comodo (the firewall we both have), nothing worked except switching to his vista laptop (again ruling out his external firewall as the probable cause, and i don't have an external).
so moral of the story is that a firewall is not the culprit. something else must be the cause.
any other ideas? -
probably a windows firewall and network discovery on the vista box.
hardware firewalls are "bypassed" because both clients are initiating the connection to hamachi's servers(the great part of this software) and most firewalls do not block outgoing traffic by default. -
Right well do you have a solution? i've tried turning windows firewall off and setting up a permission for hamachi (on windows firewall), but still no cigar.
i'd appreciate some instructions if someone knows what the problem is.
thanks
EDIT: also it worked when he changed to a vista machine so why would it be my firewall? -
The most I can figure is the XP machine is not returning packets from the Vista machine. If anyone knows anything about networking, why would it be doing this? All firewalls are completely disabled so I don't think it has anything to do with that. Could it be something on the XP machine? I feel like I've looked at every setting and nothing seems to work.

This is what we did. I had 3 other friends play with me in starcraft. My other friend and I used the newest hamachi, since we had vista. My other friends had XP SP3, they used the first hamachi (.9.9.9 or something.. ) If you google "download old hamachi" or something, you'll find it. It works for us everytime basically.

well lets walk through this,
the only thing that can block packets is either A)poor programing on the application(I doubt it)
or B) a firewall of some type. check ALL spots for a firewall. what type of environment do these PC's sit in from a network standpoint? If they are in a business of some kind talk with your IT guy about firewall policies. it is very possible that they are restricting OUTBOUND services to protect their work network. as hamachi would be a massive breach in security from that standpoint.
you also need to understand that vista and XP networking can be flaky at best. so a ping times out right? where does it die at? run a tracert IP HERE) in command prompt to see what hop it dies out at. it could be anywhere. an ISP can block ping requests on its network if it wanted to but most dont. or a dsl/cable modem is not forwarding on ICMP packets(ping runs over an ICMP protocol) there are billion different issues. but just because a client does not ping does not mean you can not communicate with it.
on your vista box look for somehthing called network discovery. if that is off it makes it so you can not ping the host(being your vista box)
its all about troubleshooting, think through it and you can get it. -
thanks for the help so far.
Snake520,
i think we've tried the last beta version on his (off memory 1.0.0.0.56 or something) with no results but i guess we could try all the others if you think it will help.
focusfre4k,
i assume HERE was suppose to be a link, no matter i downloaded it anyway, as for network discovery it is on, remember that it worked fine when we changed to two vista machines so the problem has to be something that affects vista to XP and not vista to vista.
now i wouldn't have a problem with losing the ping if we could still play games but so far, even if i host (both hamachi and the game) it's still not visible on the other machine
also this is at home, i'm connected directly to a 1 port modem and he has a home network with an external FW, but we ruled out the external FW as the problem.
i'm really lost i'll try out tracert IP and report back, can you trace packets pinged to the other hamachi address?
Thanks for the help
PS. Varulf, you know what to do i'll be online. -
that is pretty odd. a tracert will tell you where it is failing.
tracert x.x.x.x
whereever you see the stars start is where it is dying. also depending on hamachi its going through a vpn of some time so it may even just skip a bunch of real hops which would be a problem in the troubleshooting process.
what game are you trying by chance? I could not get COD4 working over hamachi -
ok i downloaded a program called VisualRoute 2008 and tried to ping to the www.visualroute.com server, then my hamachi address then his and this is the report i got back.
1. www.visualroute.com
2. My hamachi address
3. His Hamachi address
(this is the first message that came)
this leads me to believe its a firewall problem so i'll post all my firewall setting for hamachi
1. Comodo
2. Windows firewall
we've only tried this with titan quest, i'll try diablo 2 tonight
what do you think?
i don't have an external.
thanks
and here's tracert
probably important to note that i can still chat to him while all this is going on ????
what on earth is going on? i'm so confused -
kind of looks like the hop is dieing right at your computer. I would need to test hamachi but I cant right now. try to ping your hamachi address just out of curiosity.
I am thinking this is a software related issue. or possibly a software issue with vista?
have you checked on their forums? -
here this is mine
i'm really confused, i'll post what happens when i ping his vista machine soon.
thanks for your help so far man
and yeah i have a post on the hamachi forums but no help so far -
yours is resolving fine it looks like. was the other vista box you tried also x64?
-
nah vista 32-bit
ok so we tried diablo 2 and crysis with no luck but we can see each others shared files, chat etc. everything but me pinging him. -
you should try to connect manually from the game console if possible
COD4 and many others allow you to do this
not sure about diablo -
well we got hamachi for titan quest, can that connect manually? i'm not sure if it can.
-
hey i finally got something other that "request timed out"
so correct me if i'm wrong but is this evidence that the ping is at least leaving my computer?
EDIT: so empowered by this new information i repeated the earlier tests.
Visualroute
(managed to get to his desktop but was blocked)
tracert
(i don't understand how to read this but i gather it is similar to above)
so now i am like a hundred times more confused about why this is not working -
Its your friends computer thats blocking the ping. Most likely his router security..
-
ok i finally got the vista 64 bit to vista 32 bit hamachi info and this is why i don't think it's the router thats blocking it.
Tracert
VisualRoute
as you can see vista to vista works perfectly well, whats more it makes it there in one hop? (not sure how that's possible but i'm not complaining).
so it must be a vista to XP problem
we really need some help -
so has anybody had this problem or are we the only ones?
-
I dont use hamachi and instead use a real vpn setup. but it is most likely the clients not getting along between the different flavors of operating sytems
-
hmmm interesting.
care to elaborate just i little bit further?
alternative VPN apps are welcome. -
nothing app related on my end, juniper ssg network firewall with vpn and then the juniper vpn client on the PC...its gonna cost you mad money lol!
-
Check the MS list of 64bit compatible VPN's
-
yeah i'd prefer something more on the freeware side of the spectrum
-
Now there is a good VPN that works with games 100%. And what is good is that it's free. You can check the full tutorial @ http://kissmyrank.2kool4u.net/station/index.php?topic=4 . It works 100% on Xp, Vista and even Windows 7.
Still if you are an hamachi fan you can find some troubleshooting for Vista on http://logmeinwiki.com/wiki/Hamachi:Gaming_over_Hamachi but i warn you it won't be easy (and some games will not work without some additional tools).
If you don't use vpn for games i suggest that you use Wippien or something similar
. It's free.
Cheers.
