I thought it would be really useful for the Network experts to do a breakdown i.e. "Networking for Dummies" on how to properly setup a network modem/router, routers and home networks.
It would also be useful to explain the many different terms such as Default Gateway IP, DNS Server, Subnet Mask, Static vs Dynamic routing etc do and how to determine their proper values. And determine via IP Config or any other available software tools as to why you are having Network problems and how to correct them.
We could possibly make it a Wiki thread where others could make changes.![]()

I'll do it. I had a wireless guide planned but it makes sense to expand it.
Anyone else interested in such a guide please post more suggestions on what would you like included.
I guess it should be divided in at least three parts- router configuration, ADSL modems and router-modem combo config and wireless config (regardless of the device). -
Sweetness thanks !

Downloads, +1 thanks so much for the new Sticky. A section on self troubleshooting would be good.
Such as when a DSL connection drops, connecting to the NID and wirelessly connecting to isolate where a line issue is.
Having a direct line installed from the NID to the wall jack in the home to eliminate filters on phones.
Find out how far you are from the CO Before you consider DSL (from what I gather 3 miles is the limit)
Deciphering TranStats
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Fast
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 3360 768
Margin (dB) 10.0 6.0 (higher the better)
Line Attenuation (dB) 44.5 19.5 (lower the better)
Transmit Power (dBm) 5.8 8.9 (will vary based on other stats)
Has anyone thought of doing a Network Setup Guide?
