Well I didn't get it all set up until late last night so I haven't been able to give it a true test as I'm still at work. I'll find out tonight if it really worked.
If it did, you can meet me over in the 'Hardware' forum as I'm now having issues with my Blu-Ray drive.I'm gonna gather some information when I get home and try a tweek or two. If that doesn't work, look for my thread titled 'Help! I had WLAN issues on my new Z690 but Synchro helped me fix that, now I have a problem with my Blu-Ray drive'!

You're hilarious! I can't imagine what issue you're having with that but my strong personal feelings towards Blu-Ray is that it should NOT be schlepped out on the general public. I mean 300MB for 10-20 seconds of video not to mention the amount of processing time required to render a simple edit! HA! Forget that. I implore you... reconsider taking back the Z590 with the DVD -RAM burner. What exactly are you trying to accomplish with the Z690?

O.k. I'm home now and the computer connected no problem.
I'm a movie junkie and one of the main reasons for me buying this computer is that it acts as the worlds best portable Blu-Ray player. I often watch movies during the day when I'm supposed to be working so an ultra-portable, high res, BD capable computer was my criteria when shopping. People will argue, 'what diff. does it make, the screen is so small'? My answer is that I have a BD player at home (PS3) so my default option for Netflix is naturally BD. This way I have the option of watching the movie at home or at work.

Well my heart sank when, while downloading something tonight, I lost connectivity. I'm usually able to re-establish it pretty quickly but this time I couldn't. I tried my other laptop and thank god that one couldn't connect either. I checked my router and some lights were missing so I did the unplug/plug reset and it's been working fine since. That doesn't exactly bode well for the router but at least it wasn't my computers' fault this time.

Unplugging a router to power cycle it is a legitmate way of solving an intermittent problem such as you temporarily experienced, so no worries. It resets the way it sends packets to your adapter and vice versa which keeps the signal between the two devices in active state or "awake". When you fiddle around with power saving settings especially and an internet connection is dropped, sometimes this is the only way to re-establish a constant signal. Everything should be working smoothly for you now I'm sure.

Indeed it is. Sometimes it'll hang for a second in the exact same manner it used to b4 kicking me off. Now the page simply loads.
edit: Scratch that! Just downloaded Google Chrome. OMG!!! This thing is like lightning now. I can't believe it.
My next project will be either to install Win 7 (64bit), try to get my processes down to a minimum or just try out some different web browsers. All I've ever really used is IE. My goal is to make this a lean, mean machine.
Oh yeah, also need to intrduce my PS3 to my new router! -
Oh yeah, one other quick question. How can I be sure that I'm utilizing the "N" frequency? on my new router. I thought I read somewhere where you had to tweek some settings in your computer, the default was 'off' or something like that.
edit: Nevermind. I found the thread I was looking for. Looks like all my settings were already good to go. -
So to wrap this thing up if anybody is having similar issues, the culprit: my router (Linksys WRK54G Ver.6). And why I was getting kicked off of other people's networks I can only assume that it was one of 2 things. Their router wasn't designed to interface with a 64-bit OS either or poor signal strength. I was also finally able to connect my PS3 to my home network as well.

F.Y.I. I just updated my wireless ProSet driver directly from the Intel website and my connection and responsiveness to hardware switching is noticeably more rock solid! So if you experience any more drops this could be the way to go.
-
Will do. So far so good though.
-
Would going to Win XP Pro fix it?
-
Can you please provide us with a direct link? There are many files on the site, confusing.
Thanks. -
I have a Vaio Z-540 32-bit system not a Z-690 64 bit. I was just stating that installing the Intel ProSet drivers directly from the Intel site did not cause me any problems. But here you go - I'll bring you to the page where you select which OS you are using with the 5100/ 5300 Wireless Networking Card. You can download the driver only package or the full software + driver package in most cases.

Were you going to do that anyway? If so, might as well give it a shot and see.

Actually I uninstalled the Wifi driver, downloaded a new one...no dropping issues now. -
I do have another issue on my Z-690 64 bit...when I do the Windows update via the System Maintenance, just sits at 0%...I did attempt also on an Ethernet cable, same...so not wifi issue.
Followup - It is actually any download...just tried to download a Vista Sidebar Gadget, just sits at "Starting".
