OK, after going round and around with Gateway about the voluminous amounts of bluescreen crashes I got, they informed me my warranty was jsut a few weeks out of date, but they would be glad to sell me a new hard drive. :gateway:![]()
Canned them...got a Western Digital 60 gig. Here's my problem, ever since installing it, my wireless will not identify in hardware manager. I have installed several driver fixes, but nothing takes. Tried the Intel Pro utility and it could not identify it. It shows in hardware as other/networkcontroller with an exclaimation mark, but it has no name.
Secondly, I get eternal disk error from the dvd/cd-rw. Can these 2 items be replaced? And if so, is ther a good internal NIC that is 802.11g compatible?
Thanks ahead of time, you geeks rock...I can only aspire to achieve your knowledge someday.

Oh, here is my configuration:
Gateway M505 1.4Ghz (Display model
)
XP Pro, -
how did you get your OS onto your new HD; by installing everything fresh or copying the info over?
wifi card:
if you are 100% you have the correct driver (a yellow exclamation mark is a dead giveaway for incorrect driver), then physically remove the card from the laptop. uninstall all drivers and software you have installed in conjunction with the wifi card. then follow the steps you would normally do when installing the card as if you brought it home from the store. -
I loaded from a bootable XP Pro w/ SP2 CD.
I have tried the driver from gateway and from Intel.
Any good sites to help with how to take the puppy out? -
should just be a panel on the bottom of the notebook. couple screws and voila.
-
ok, gotta hit the hay, but I will give it a try tomorrow and reply here...same thing with the CD-rw/DVD if I want to replace it?
-
not sure about dvd drive; you'll prolly have to find a manual on their site or wait for someone to post who has one
good luck -
:centrino:
IT guy from work thinks the Registry error I am getting could be where the issue is. Gonna try a clean install of XP Pro and see if that helps with both issues. I'll let you guys know how it turns out...next step will be to crack the box and start disonnecting and re-connecting. -
Ok good, let us know how it turns out.

Go into the device manager, and uninstall the optical drive. Then restart the machine, and Windows will install it automatically. It is possible that you need to upgrade the firmware for the drive.
Where did you get your drivers from? If you installed them from the restore CD, they should have worked. Install one at a time to ensure they are implemented correctly.
Windows Update will also let you know if there are newer drivers avaliable.
