How do I see who's connected to my wireless internet? -- I don't trust my neighbor anymore

I live in a small apartment complex and I gave my friend/neighbor the access key that comes built into my AT&T wireless DSL modem so he could use my wireless. Now, however, it's been several months, and I'm concerned that he's given the key to others in my building. How can I view who's on my network? ... or how do I see who's using my internet? Is it even technically a network?

So what's the verdict? Lots of moochers?

 

Just change the key and tick off the entire building .

 

Or just split the bill and make them pay some

 

First, change the SSID and then change the configuration so that your wireless router does not broadcast its SSID. Next, make sure you are running at least WEP and preferably WPA. Lastly change the key every now and then if you are really paranoid.

 

If you connect to the routers admin page, their should be a status showing who's connected using DHCP, wired and wireless. It will list pc my MAC address. If your concern just change the key and SSID as suggested.

 

It will also show you what website they've been looking at in the control panel, therefore you can blackmail your neighbor because he's been looking at porn.

 

You could also filter the MAC addresses to allow only specific computers onto the network.

 

Haha, I was going to say use filter MAC address too.

Another easy way to see is view "DHCP Client List", most router offers that function but.. not sure if it shows people that didn't get their IP automatically assigned (eg. Manually Set).

But the best solution is to just rename your SSID, change WEP/WAP key

Turns out, so far, I've only seen one other computer connected. I'd love to be able to see what he's doing and even more importantly, I love to be able to screw with him!

Actually, the most important thing is... how do I login to my router? I thought I could with 192.168.0.1 but it's not working. Do I have to be hard wired?

Also, Network Magic tried to login to my router but it wanted a username and password. I don't know it! Bla.... help?

If you change those settings he will need to connect. Which is not likely unless you used a weak security key or WEP and not WPA(2).

 

Most routers have a "log" capability. They aren't very detail but... might serve your purpose. & no to the second part, since its a log, its a record of "past" activity so... your router might still have those information, provided you didn't use the internet enough to flood the log and forces your router to delete the old information/data. Maybe it only keeps 500 lines of activity so.. as long as you didn't do 500 stuff, might still have a record of his surfing record '.'

 

Most newer ones have 5000 or above.
