Hey
I have not seen any stickies on this or other posts, so Im just wondering this:
I have a Acer desktop that I do all my downloading on (which is not wireless or bluetooth enabled.
I also have a Xps m1530 Dell laptop which I watch the movies or play games on.
So how can I get all the files from my desktop to my laptop without having to use a flash driver ect.
It says there is a way to do it on VIsta 32bit, says share files, but I can never see it on my laptop.
Can someone please please help,
tHANKS

please specify the operating system on your desktop. if it is windows xp. you will have to download link layer topology responder from here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...1D-EE46-481E-BA11-37F485FA34EA&displaylang=en
please specify the method of communication between the laptop and the desktop (i mean ethernet or wifi ??) -
You can also use the poor man's network if each computer can connect to the internet - get a web-based email account, log onto it from one computer and email the files to yourself, then log onto the account again with the second computer, and download the files you just sent to yourself.
I realize that it's not much better than sneakernet if the two computers sit right next to each other, but otherwise it makes for a simple way to send files to yourself without having to carry around flash drives or set up a full network connection between the two.

Aren't there some cables that allow pc to pc 2 pc or pc 2 laptop? like a usb or something

Assuming that you have a common router and that you have set a home network, then wherever your files are, just right click on the folder and make them shareable. Go in Network in Vista and you should see that folder, then you can either use them from there or just copy them into a folder in your laptop. -
Well, there are cables that can be used to set up a two-computer network - a Cat5 cross-over cable, or a Cat6 cable (which I believe does not have to be of a cross-over type??). That gets you the network, but you still need to have a way for each computer to see the other's files - set file sharing for the file you want to share. Technically, you could just have one computer set to share its files, the other doesn't need to share it's own files because it can "see" the other's files, copy what it wants, and move the copies to a local folder as desired.

@OP:
Actually, I think that, on top of all the other good advice you've received about setting up file sharing, there is still one ingredient that may be missing. I am going to assume here that the laptop is running _Vista, but that the desktop is running XP - correct or not?
If not, the rest doesn't apply; however, if I am correct, then you may need to download and install the so-called LLTD utility for XP from Microsoft.
As described in MS knowledge base article 922120, because of the way that _Vista sets up its network graphic, _Vista machines frequently cannot "see" XP machines unless the XP machines have the Link-Layer Topology Discovery ("LLTD") responder installed.
This may be your problem inasmuch as it seems to be the case that your _Vista laptop cannot "see" your XP desktop (assuming that I was correct that you're running XP on the desktop). This link will take you directly to the validation page for the LLTD responder; once you've validated, you can download from there. -
What about setting up a network sharing folder of some kind? I remember at my school there were folders/files on the network that can be accessed by any laptop and you could copy or add files to the folders. I don't know how to do it but maybe someone does
or if the files are music/movies, go to WMP and right click library and click Media Sharing, if the laptop is on the same network it should be in the dialog box and just select it (you may have to shut off firewall), this works for my xbox and I'm sure it can be done w/ laptops -
See my answer!
