Well, I moved to my new place last week and have been relying on an open wireless network from I've-no-idea-whom-or-where. The speed is good when it works, usually 4mb down and 300k up. It looks like the network administrator intends this to be open access to everyone so it's not like I am doing something illegal here.
Now the problem is the network sometimes appears out of range and since this is the only source of connectivity for me, I want to make sure it's available at all time. Currently, I have an unused wireless router (netgear 182.11G) which I am not sure I can make a bridge to strenghten the signal bar. If this is possible, please tell me how. If it's not, tell me what equipment I need to get to boost the signal.
Thanks in advance.

You must get permission to use this network. You can't assume it's ok to use this network connection until you've talked to the owner. Only the owner will give you permission to do add an access point to boost signal strength.
You need to contact an ISP and have a cable modem/DSL modem installed. -
Use a direct cable to wall. I discoved i didnt have a direct route and it hindered the connection and speed.

Good advice. Another point - if you don't know to whom the network belongs, or why they've left it open, are you really sure you want to be using it in the first place? After all, you've no idea whether whomever owns/controls the network is, or is not, reading every single thing you upload/download across that network - hopefully you've not been sending anything sensitive over this network.

I know I'm posting on an old thread but this link will help you boost your signal for dirt cheap. Hopefully, this helps ppl that want to boost their signal w/o spending $ for antenna's and such.
Long live MacGyver!
EDIT: youtube video on how to make it
