Anyone know a simple way around this?
I am trying to setup a file server for at least 12 users but XP-pro only allows a share limit of 10 users
-
Yes, with patched tcpip.sys
->
http://www.lvllord.de/ This is for 50 connections though.
<s>The manual way is pretty complicated, hex®istry editing is required as far as I know.</s> -
Cheers ATG. Is it proven to work and safe? I cant afford any downtime on this file server.
The patcher looks quite simple. -
Well I'm using it for years now on my personal computer(s) and I didn't get any problems with it(that I know of) and I haven't read/heard a single bad thing about it but I have no idea how safe would be to implement it on a server.
The patcher just overwrites the old tcpip.sys with the new one(backing up the old copy first).
EDIT: OK found a manual way, NO IDEA IF IT WILL ACTUALLY WORK!
You may need to be in Safe Mode to do that.

I think ill go with the patch. Just a little worried with the virus warnings though.
We will find out tomorrow if it works. I layed out the CAT6 cables today for a gigabit connection.
The file server only has a single HD so it should theoretically be able to pump out up to 70MB/s (560mb) through the gigE.
It should be optimal enough for at least 15 users. -
Hope it works fine.
What virus warnings? -
As soon i downloaded the zip, AVG idiot alarm went off straight away
-
I just LOVE false positives
You can try the manual way to see if AVG will detect your original(modded) tcpip.sys as a virus

I would be interested in knowing if this does anything for you. the 10-user limit refers to concurrent users. With your 12-users all connecting at the same time and getting connection denied errors?
I probably would have altered the auto disconnect time from the default 15 minutes before going this route. Really, if you are in a situation where you have 12 users hitting your computer this hard you ought to be using Small business server rather than xp or a linux file server.
What are they doing? -
I do have a proper server setup here in the office. Though i had to make a seperate file server for this scenario. Someone needs to upload the sound to every 30 mins to this terminal thats why i made a seperate dedicated server.
There are exactly 9 workstations that will always be connected and streaming audio files.
Id like to put a maximum of 12-15 because once in a while, some extra users might need to log on.
Trying it now... -
Darn the security its so tight.. it wont even let me unzip it. It just gives me errors even if i disable AVG.
EDIT: ended up working after disabling all AVG processes. A Windows File security prompt did come up asking me to insert the XP sp2 disc though..
Still yet to be tested... -
Seems like you are asking an awful lot from an XP box, an OS that really isn't designed for file serving
-
This is normal, just hit "Cancel". XP detects "unknown version" of tcpip.sys that's all.
-
We use The Record Player and the audio files are located on the dedicated file server i made.
The file sizes are quite small and easily streamed. We can even remotely play/stream the files through the VPN smoothly. I think this XP box (Lenovo Thinkcentre) should handle it just fine for at least 15 users.
Some of the users like me just access the directories (which still counts as a user under the 10limit)
Id just like some head space.. -
Hi all,
I am quite new to this forum
@ flipfire
Interested to know if all this did work for you? I have a very similar problem here but don't seem to be able to get it to work.
