I'm curious how do you setup two PPPoe connections with one DSL modem. I don't think you can do that. So both computers can log onto the internet at the same time?

    Edit:

It doesn't matter if people are willing to accept it or not. The Phone companies force you to use PPPoe so thus you don't really have a choice.

Yes, that's one of the purposes of PPPoE, but you get to setup it properly.

Good thing the phone company sets it up for ya.

It ain't that hard anyways. Just have a user ID and password and the ISP will make sure they are setup at their end to receive your credentials. It's like Dialup, except faster.

Well, that's coincidently PPPoE, is the old PPP (dialup) protocol but piggyback on ethernet, since dialup is more secure because it would use a telephone line but also the protocol is session oriented, after a certain time of inactivity you get kickedoff the network, this is one of the reason they DSL companies have kept it, beside the fact that they would not like to spend more money in a new infrastructure.

I'm very surprise that DSL has lasted this long, with cable, fiber and setellite, they should long time gone, and I hink they will soon. I think they only ones doing well are those offering VoIP.

Satellite is mad expensive and doesn't offer much better speeds than DSL or Cable. Cable is sometimes inconvenient cause, gasp!!!!, some people DON'T have cable (I don't believe this one but I hear it all the time for some reason). Fiber. Dang, even more expensive than Satellite. Plus the only company that will run fiber up to your house is Verizon. AT&T will use Fiber for the big trunk lines, but run standard copper lines to your house. Cable, IMO, is the way to go and has the most potential to grow.

You have problems with satellite during strong rainy days, the signal attenuations is big.

I have fiber and I would never go back to cable, fiber can't go backward, it will just keep raising the throughput bar. Cable is limited, and soon will maxout.

hey guys just sayin i fixed it. I set my router to my PPPoE connection, as opposed to assigning an IP address automatically. This not only helped my laptop and desktop problems, but also my xbox live as well.

went into my router settings, in the setup feature it was set on "Obtain an IP address automatically" so instead I set it to "PPPoE", put in my login and connection stuff, and it worked. The only thing is, with the file sharing and such, in order for my laptop to see my desktop, i have to go into the control panel on my xp desktop choose network settings to go through the network ID wizard each time, isn't there a way to make it permanent?

Ahhh, I assumed that this was done long time ago when me and surfasb we talked about PPPoE, but you said that you didn't have a router!

I'm wodering why the settings gets deleted? when this happens, do you see the laptop from the PC? If the answer is yes, then many you have some security setup in your laptop so it is not seen by other computers.

Well on the XP machine when u click on My Network Places it should show up there..if it doesn't u may have to click Show Icons for UPnP devices on the left task area of that window...it takes a while to search for connected devices.

In order for the Vista machine to see the XP, i had to download the Link-Layer Topology Discovery fix. Click

You need to instal Samba for Ubuntu files shares to show up on a Windows network.

That is so odd. I have no advice for this weird occurance.

In the ancient Babylone (as related in the Bible) there was a king (Nimrod) that ordered to build a tower in the center of the city, called Babel tower, but God wasn't in agreement with it, he wanted people to spread instead, then to stop the tower construction he confused the languages of the people, then of course because the lack of communication, people stopped building the tower, then people speaking the same languages start going in different places of the globe.

    That's why the application to translate from one language to another is called babelfish (Yahoo);

I use it sometimes too, but it is not perfect, and when it doesn't find the right translation it just leave the word the way you entered :D
