I have a Gateway P-16831fx and am currently running Windows Vista.
When I click the Network Center Icon for wireless on the bottom end of the Task bar it says "The dependency service or group failed to start"
When I diagnose the problem via Internet Explorer link or network center it says
"Computer does not have a Network Adapter Installed & configured"
Well Both were installed w/ drivers... It just started doing this after I relogged in from screen saver in the morning. So I uninstalled the Network adapter both wireless and LAN.. well it found lan drivers but it cant find wireless but the point is I still can't even connect using the LAN cable.
If you can help , thank you! (I guess I need to find drivers now for the wireless... checking gateway site)

I found the Drivers and am downloading them for the wireless but I still can't figure out how I fix this problem.
-
Make sure the WZC (Wireless Zero Configuration) Service is running.
Start Menu>Run>services.msc>Wireless Zero Configuration>Start Service -
I installed the Drivers for wireless rebooted. Nothing
Then typed in services.msc and I don't see WZC listed.
So as of now I still stand @ Point 1. -
Hmm. Maybe I should boot into Windows and check on this, but I'm thinking WZC needs to be running and listed.
-
Well..........Its not listed so what do I do?
-
Ok, on another tack, do the network devices show up as installed properly and everything in Device Manager?
-
Yes, and when you click them it says "Device working properlly"
I tried a basic windows system restore from a day 1/2 ago when Im 100% sure everything was working properly and it still doesn't work. -

Sounds like a FW is blocking your connections.
-
Have none running.
"The dependency service or group failed to start"
to me sounds like a some basic windows operation is failing to start.
Don't know though........ -
I'm pretty sure that's WZC that failed to start.

You can restart the service from the Administrative Tools. If not running make sure you change the setting so it will auto start.

Thanks for the help. I was getting frustrated the other day so I ended up just backing my files up to the ipod, since I didnt have much yet. New laptop.... and WIPED IT OUT! Works now

This seems to be a common problem on Vista - basically, it sounds like either WZC itself is disabled, or one or more of the apps it relies on (the so-called "dependencies" is disabled). From this link I found the following things you can try:
1) Check on WZC itself: control panel ->administrative tools ->
services -> WZC & make sure that the service is enabled & set to
automatic start.
2) Check on NDIS Usermode I/O protocol and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) (should also be in the path control panel ->administrative tools ->
services); make sure both are set to run automatically.
EDIT: Apparently, in Vista the wireless connection manager is no longer called Wireless Zero Configuration, but either (i) Automatic Wireless Lan Configuration, or (ii) WLAN SVC, so you should also look for one of those two services in the path control panel ->administrative tools ->
services ->
I can't connect via wireless or LAN. Help please!
