I just got my first shipping from hp.com. the second shipping will be the notebook that i ordered itself.
when i opened the box for the first shipping, i found a Targus WIFI scanner. IT was probably my mistake that I clicked on the Targus wifi scanner instead of the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router.they were practically next to each other in the hp.com website. I wanted a router.
i don't know much about this targus wifi scanner, but is this thing worth keeping? it cost about 49.99 after rebate. I was expecting a router. Is this device completely useless? It might be good if I travel, which I have done a lot over the summer, but it's not like i'm looking for access points whereever i go. i'm going to london next month for 12 days, after that, i ain't going to be going anywhere for the next year coz i will be working my butt off saving money all over again. i dont know, i'm just confused. Should I return it? Oh well, this is a lesson learned that next time I order online, I need to double check everything I order to make sure it's the right one.

It's really useless in my opinion, it pretty much detects any SSID's that you can connect to - pretty much meaning, you don't have to turn on your laptop to check if there is wireless there.
Though, I often carry my PSP around in my bag when I travel, and it has a built in WiFi connection, so I tend to use that to check on connections

I also think this device, and especially at that price, is not worth it.
First of all, whenever I use my notebook away from home, I know whether there is wireless available or not. If I'm at school, I know I have that network. If I need to study or write something, I know what coffee shops/libraries have free wifi. When I'm traveling, I know that the vast majority of hotels/motels have wifi available (not in Tennessee/Kentucky/Alabama/Arkansas...lol, j/k, you know I love the South)....and finally, if I ever am in a situation not covered above, I'll just turn on my notebook....easy as pie.
JMHO, but this is the kind of accessory that is destined to sit unused in your backpack, desk, car, whatever.
If you do actually need a wifi scanner, you can get one for $20 less here. -
seriously, those are the kinds of things that you get for free with some company's name printed on it.
i've seen the (dumb) ones for 5 bucks online. the smart ones are little more, but nowhere near worth 50+ bucks. -
And some of them will be unable to detect a signal that the notebook will.

Yes, you should return it.

yea i have one of those. i find it useful, esp since my psp got bricked so i can check for connections w/out consuming battery power on my lappy[laptop]
I opened the box and found a Targus WIFI Scanner?!?!
