when i connect to my router, and go to details for the wireless, it says internet for IPv4 but limited for IPv6. is this normal? does my router have to support IPv6 for it to say something else. what is IPv6 suppose to say? internet?
-
It is normal. IPv6 hasn't been launched at this time...I believe it's planned for next year or something. It's like wireless 802.11n technology right now...like in its draft stage. So, BTW...you should and it is safe to disable it by going into "Network and Sharing Center"-->"Manage Wireless Networks" on the left...select your wireless network and choose properties, and uncheck IPv6 in the list.
-
It is suppose to say limited, since your router does not support IP 6.
-
OMG!...surfasb's alive!
-
but for the wired connection on my desktop, it says local for IPv6 though
-
Well, actually, if your router supports IP6, you can connect to the internet via IP6 only. Many of the ISP already support IP6 only connections and Google has an IP6 website.
Yeah though. Work has been kicking my rear. Plus I'm studying to certify myself in Server 2008. And I'm gonna start learning SQL server. On top of that, I am also buying a tablet PC. All the while trying to fit in a little quality time. I know, I have such a hard life. I get paid, I have a roof over my head and I look good. -
 WOW!!!...Good luck w/ everything. I plan to get certified myself...someday! Just need to get my lazy butt off the couch!
-
so i am wondering why my desktop says local but the laptop's wireless says limited

Normally limited means you connected to your local network (router) but do not have internet connection. This can be related to IP6, if you disable it you should clear every thing up. FW's can generate these responses too.
-
Soon IPv4 will be phase out, and IPv6 will be the ruling protocol, by then all upper layers application will have to use network IPv6 layer, it seems that in your system, some applications don't.
-
Pretty much your router supports it (most all do) but most isp's arent using it yet. Its a **** poor time to be getting cisco certified for myself right now
ip6 makes a lot of things more difficult on the networking side...but it needs to be done so we dont run out of addresses!
-
Most definitely...IPv6 looks scary
...I am intimidated somewhat by it...but it's necessary as you say.
-
And is real so we better get used to it.
-
IP6 isnt' really all taht scary, since most of it automatically sets itself up. If they decide to implement NAT into IP6, then that would definitely get tricky. NAT on IP4 is a pain in the rear as is
-
no i meant that ipv4 says internet and ipv6 says limited. but internet still works

This means that your router supports IP6, Limited connection as previous stated. You are using IP4 for internet access.
