I can't believe that I don't know the answer to this so basic question. Except back in the days before AOL I've had an internet service provider, currently it is Earthlink.
Question is: When I'm using a public wireless access is there a need for an ISP to browse the web?
I assume that for e-mail, unless I'm using web mail that an ISP is needed?
Thanks

Anywhere there is internet, there is an ISP. If you can connect to the internet, its through an ISP. All a router does is turns that wired internet, into wireless internet for a home / office.

I realize now that my question was not clear. Or, I'm just not catching on.
If I personally don't have an ISP provider can I connect to the web at a public hotspot?
Thanks! -
Yes you can. Say if your at a library or starbucks. If they have a wireless network and it is free, all you need is a wireless card and you can use there internet. If you wanted wireless in your house, you need an ISP, Modem, and a router.
Sorry for not understanding your question

you do not. the public access point is your makeshift ISP for the duration of your connection. you simply connect to the wifi network and then launch your browser. be aware that while some places offer free wifi, some require payment or a subscription. for those, you will launch your browser and automatically be redirected to a page where you can sign up to pay for access. the free places, you just launch and go.

Thanks very much for the help. Cleared up what has been bothering me for some time.
