Best way to improve laptop wifi?
better NIC card?
extender?
Here is what I have.
I have a Sony Vaio cgn n130g with 3945abg card with Proset/Wireless driver.
I place my laptop at the window at a 45 degree angle to the window and I get 2 bars. I have to keep laptop there though.
What can I put at window relay that signal so I can move away from window with laptop?
OR
can I get a different NIC card that will reach further?
OR
is there a way of strengthening the antenna in laptop? extending its reach?
putting a radar dish on laptop lol
Thanks

They have an external modification popular with the EEE community atm. It involves a pigtail from the network card to an unused port, such as your phone jack. Then there is a small external antenna that plugs-in. It can be cumbersome if you enjoy the form factor of your laptop, but gives a huge boost apparently. If you are interested in this solution, then post back I will search for the thread with instructions. Changing the card and adding more internal antennas and/or upgrading your drivers may help as well. For a start, go to the properties of the card and ensure you are on mas power.

You can use a more sensitive wireless adapter card like the 200mW Engenius or the ParkerVision pcmcia wireless adapter. I believe there is also a 300mW Engenius now. Do a google search for either of those terms.
Also if you don't mind the trailing cable, you can use a usb type of wireless adapter and leave it sitting on the window sill.
See this example on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Ubiquiti-300mW-...photoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262
Or this one (much cheaper): http://cgi.ebay.com/400mW-USB-Wirel...photoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262 -
Great. Thanks.
Ok. No phone jack here so thats out.
Changing the card. That is an idea.
I actually went to Intel driver and went from 0-1 bars and constant disconnecting to 2 bars steady no disconnecting. I started a thread on it last week.
If you know of any other driver/software to try I would appreciate it.
Ok I went to properties. I assume you mean more power but I didnt see anythnig like that.
Here is what I have when I click on properties in Device manager.
- Ad Hoc Channel
- Ad Hoc Power Management
- Ad Hoc QoS
- Mixed Mode Protection
- Power Management (do you mean max this one out?)
- Roaming Aggressiveness
- Throughput Enhancement
- Transmit Power
- Wireless Mode
Thanks in advance
Thank you also.
I am interested in these possibilities too. -
You can drill your own port even, the phone jack just made it easy. Max your power management and your transmit power. Those should bump you up to max battery drain/best connection.
Inprove Wifi signal via extender or different NIC in laptop? suggestions?
