I am trying to install a MS Vista HP wireless all-in-one. The HP all-in-one is an HP Officejet J4680. It has built-in wireless 802.11b/g and high speed USB 2.0. The specs say that the network ports are ethernet 10 / 100 baseTX (RJ45). It also says that I must purchase a 7 foot USB A to USB cable. I am wondering why do I need this cable? Does the cable go from the printer to the laptop?
I was under the impression that all I needed to do was connect the power and the HP all-in-one locates my home network via a little bit of software set up. Is this true? My Charter cable modem is plugged into my D-Link router and all 3 wireless laptops work great.
Please help.
Thank you.

No, you shouldn't need the USB cable...not as long as u don't plan to connect it directly to a computer. I set up a wireless printer once and it doesn't require any cables except for the power cable AFAIK.
You will have to configure the Network IP Configuration; by assigning the wireless printer a free IP Address from ur network and that's about it. Everything is "wireless".....
The only real issues I had was getting the drivers to install
...and I believe it was an HP printer as well.
Installing a network printer.
