Hi I am having really poor performance issues with my 6200 in comparison to my old 4965 is that a real problem or is the 4965 just a better card even though it is older?

anything? i see people are viewing lol

Have you tried the latest Intel drivers? Sometimes Dell/Alienware will give you old drivers in their factory image. Also please don't bump your thread more than once in 24 hours as per the forum rules.

sorry, yeah i updated to the latest driver on the intel website and download speeds are aweful still in comparison to my old 4965

Are you sure that nothing in background is stealing from your bandwich? Like Windows Update or basiclly any thing like that?
-
Im pretty sure of it, I dont see anything else going on. Is there a way I can check and see if theres anything thats not easily seen thats going on? With that comment does this mean the 6200 should be doing better than the 4965?

The 4965 is technically the superior wireless card over the 6200 though... but the differences shouldn't be that significant. Could you describe your issue in a little more detail? How exactly are you defining poor performance?
-
well an example for steam with my laptop with the 4965 to download fear 2 it takes about 2 hours it says and will run at about 1.3 mb/s download rate and on the system with the 6200 it says it will take about 18 hours and it runs at about 400 kb/s

Have you tried physically checking the connections on the WLAN card? Maybe something got jiggled loose during shipping or it was not properly connected. Also do you have another laptop to test it in? If it works fine in another laptop, could be a software conflict. If it is still slow in another laptop, could be a dud card.
Unless you are using both cards in the same laptop, that comparison isn't really valid as there maybe other factors that could be contributing. -
No I dont feel comfortable opening up my laptop, desktops im fine with but im not too good with opening up and checking a laptop without screwing up or breaking something :/

If it's your M18x in your signature, then it is really easy. Once you remove the base cover, it is right there. Also Alienware is owned by Dell so it has the service manual available to the public at support.dell.com. Just make sure you properly ground yourself.

Again it is a quick way to check vs RMA your laptop or having a technician come to your home. -
Don't rely on something like Steam to figure out what works best for download, use a connection test like speedtest or something.
Using Steam as a benchmark is bad because there is too many variables. They could be pushing a major update or just high traffic. -

How do you ground yourself? I have changed parts out dozens of times in same laptop, wi-fi, cpus. gpus, hdds ,ram etc and never done anything but remove the battery before starting.
Never had any problems! Seems overkill to swap out just wifi? -

Look at those Intel power consumption figures at idle. Looks like the wheels really fell off the Intel wireless radio design 'bus' after they tried to brew up a successor to the i4965.
