Hi Notebookreview forum, I'm new here.![]()
Anyhow I was wondering if you folks could help me solve a problem with my Intel 6200 network adapter.
I have an HP Envy 14, general specs:
-Windows 7 Home Premium
-4 GB RAM
-160 GB SSD
-Removed all bloatware manually
My problem is that my wireless speeds are incredibly slow, as it can take minutes for a 20 second youtube video to load! I don't think my router is the problem, since when I connect my Envy 14 to the router with a cable, the speeds boost up dramatically! And my bro (who lives in the same apartment as me) has blazing high wireless speeds as well.
My Intel 6200 Settings through Device Manager:
-802.11n Channel Width for Band 2.4 --- Value: Auto
-802.11n Channel Width for Band 5.2 --- Value: Auto
-Roaming Aggressiveness --- 5 Highest
-Transmit Power --- 5 Highest
-Updated with latest driver 13.3.0.24
Any help? I have Comcast and a Netgear router if anyone's wondering. Thanks!

Go to speedtest.net and pingtest.net and see what it says you're speeds are. Before you run the tests though, make sure nobody is logged onto Windows on any other computer, or as many of the other computers that are on your network are off or disconnected while running those tests. Make sure your "bro" also logs off or disconnects, as what he is doing on the internet while that test is taking place could skew the results.

If you can verify you're the only one on your wireless (if its secured), then the fault here lies with Comcast, not your wireless. They need to come out and look at your line quality and adjust the SNR of your cable modem. This doesn't make sense though. Your upload speed is fine. I think someone is mooching on your network.
Plug your notebook directly into the modem and re-run those tests... (un-plug the wireless router) -
yep, I've made sure I was the only one on the network by typing in the ip address into the internet address bar and getting into get into my router settings. I also disabled my wireless and plugged in my Envy 14 into the router directly with a wire. I re-did the tests and my results are amazing as shown below:
Anyhow, do you think the problem could be with the router? My Ipod Touch 2G has the same problem as my computer, but my iPhone 1G works just fine with the WiFi. Maybe its a compatibility problem? Intel 6200 doesn't match my Netgear router?
Oh and another HP Windows 7 computer has speeds just as slow as mine via WiFi...I really think its a compatibility problem. -

Interesting. What kind of security do you have setup?

WPA2-PSK (AES)

Ok, try taking down the encryption to WEP shared key... and see what that does for you.

do some research on wifi interference and channel selection........

Is your routers firmware and drivers up to date?
I did a quick search and it seems to be a router issue when dealing with win7 -
Tried this, didn't help.
No, it apparently only has one firmware version according to Netgear-and I have that version. But yeah, I'm almost certain its a Router to Windows 7 compatibility problem. My bro has Vista, I have Win7, and the other computer that had speeds just like mine was Win7. What confuses me though is, my iPod Touch 2G has slow speeds, but my bro's iPod Touch 3G has very fast WiFi, along with my iPhone 1G....
So....you guys have/use any good+compatible router for Windows 7. I'm a casual gamer, but I like to watch a lot of youtube. It took 20 minutes for a 45 second video to load today.......I can't live with this for 2 semesters! -
When looking at routers, I usually start here Best wireless routers - CNET Reviews
Then if I'm planning on flashing third party firmware to my brand new router and voiding the warranty
I check that router's compatibility on dd-wrt's website. There are other third party firmwares but thats the one I use.
But with the routers listed I doubt you'd need third party firmware. Cnet is usually pretty dead on with their reviews. Good luck to you. Personally, I'd probably consider the E3000 and WNDR3700 on the top of my list.
I've used Netgear and Linksys routers for years, and I've never had any problems.
Out of curiosity, what is your router model number? I didn't see you post it. You might be able to solve your incompatibility by flashing third party firmware to it. Just be careful if you're planning on doing that, make sure you read all the information on www.dd-wrt.com | Unleash Your Router before starting any flashing process. -
OneMan, did you solve your problem?
Have you tried setting your roaming aggressiveness lower? -
I've had probs w/the 6200 as well.
I had to disable 802.11n mode in the wireless adapter properties.
-GOTO: Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections
-Right Click: Wireless connection > properties
- Click configure
- Advanced
- Set 802.11n mode = disabled
Either that or set your router to only do G.
I don't know why but I can't get n to work w/the 6200. -
On my new ENVY 17t-2000, it came with the same Intel Centrino Advanced 6200 WLAN module. I have been experiencing constant crash/freezes for several weeks now. It happens when I tried to download file from the net and/or transferring file between my laptop and my NAS(WHS). I tried updating the mobo BIOS, updating WLAN drivers, re-install WLAN drivers, and downgrading WLAN drivers to no avail. When I disabled the wireless module and go hard wire, everything is good.
Now, my laptop won't even start because of it. It says "Wireless module not Support....The system has detected a wireless module installed in the system that is not supported. System halted. Please remove device and restart....WLAN module id (0702)"
I am going through HP support right now. Will update once more information is learned.

My ebay bought Intel 6200 AGN looks different from yours...
And it doesn't crash like yours either. -
I'm having similar issues. I'll paste my write-up from the 8130 Owner's Lounge:
"Hey so I recently got mine and I'm having a problem.... My internet download won't get past 1Mbps (via speedtest.net, and 9Mbps up). I've got the Intel C.A-N 6230, and a Netgear router. I'm running Windows 7, and I'm using what I assume is its wireless manager, which on a mouse-over of my connected network shows "radio type: 802.11n". So I go to Networking in the Control Panel and right click on the wireless settings, properties, then configuration for the hardware. 802.11n mode is enabled, and the last option, wireless mode, is set to a/b/g (there is no n option). I've also enabled the "Enable Intel Connection settings" checkbox in under Status > Wireless Properties.... Drivers are those which were found on the included disc, and windows has been updated in full.
I'm not sure what the issue is with connectivity here, I haven't been able to reach speeds past 1Mbps on Firefox, IE, or any other application. I'm not sure if it's significant, but the software for advanced statistics isn't reading any packages outside of 1Mbps in Transmit/Receive either. My LAN connection to the router itself is reading in at 65Mbps.... My old, crippled laptop is able to reach 20Mbps download (again @speedtest), this system should be able to at least match that. Any help is appreciated...."
This worked for me, thanks. It's odd too because my router's status is reading 802.11n, so I figured that's what I should be using. I'd still like to get the N-configuration working, as I'm only getting 18Mbps down now while my Gateway MX6448 (five year old p-o-s) is reaching 2Mbps more than that. F'in lame!!
