I'm not sure what a 'good' connection is nowadays. My parents said it was fine, but I have my doubts. I don't think I've seen any download break 220 kb/s. It seems pretty bad.
-
What exactly are you trying to do with it, though, and how much are you paying? It's not that bad, all things considered. Good ping on it, too. It's not "fast" by any stretch, but it's not horrible.
-
I'd guess your service is probably supposed to be 1.5/768, somewhat knocked down for distance. It's basically a starter package dsl, kind of a high ping for dsl though. Are you sure your max speed is 220 kb/s, not 220kB/s? Big difference between the two. I haven't seen my downloads on cable break 220kB/s very often either, mostly due to slow upload on the other end.
Personally, I rate good connections by low pings rather than by throughput, although your download speed is on the lower end of acceptable. Then again, I'm a little ping crazy and try to get it down below 10 -
Casual downloading, video streaming, playing Counter-Strike: Source and some MMORPGs. Nothing too serious. Kind of wish I could get faster download speeds though.
Apparently we're paying approx. $103 CAD monthly, phone service included.
EDIT: And you're probably right woofer. -
for 103 a month you should have better but that is acceptible in terms of funtioning.

That's a rip off. This is what I am getting for 20 per month including phone service here in Greece. Of course your location is quite far away from big cities and from what I have heard North America is paying a lot for broadband. My opinion is that your connection is adequate for email, news reading and low bandwidth video streaming and maybe gaming. -
Wow, that's a lot to be paying for that kind of speed. I hope you've got multiple lines, tv, unlimited international calling, and some other expensive phone services bundled in there, because I'm almost positive you can get at least 4-5 Mbps downstream for roughly 30CAD.
-
Oh trust me, I wish. Glad I'm not paying for it though. I'll have to worry about that when I move out to college.
Just figured I'd ask for curiosity's sake. Thanks for your insights. -
Wow, it seems like Canada is always getting the short end of the stick in terms of good broadband. I'm not sure about the exact conversion for money, but for $40, I get about 10mbps/2mbps. At least your ping is decent, mine is usually about ~50 on wireless.
-
In terms of 'good connection nowadays', those speeds are no where near worth the money you are paying.
I suggest you look for a better plan. I believe Shaw Communications Canada can offer you a better solution. -

I have almost doubled my speed with the help from here:

cripes I agree, see if you can get Shaw or something else.
Internet
and in my experience they dont normally even look at your usage as sometimes I double my 250Gb/month
FYI, im on an old grandfathered package but 28 down, 8 up and 9ms ping. -
For me thats kinda slow.
Need at least 10mb/s upload speed since i usually host a CSS Server in the weekends for my friends and i need all the speed i can get to push all the custom stuff i got on the server.
(Maps, skins, mods ect.)
But for 1 computer its not all that bad. -
look at post #1

most ISP's keep your upload/ download ratios unbalanced as most people use about 10 X the download vs upload -
It's not too bad. I'm assuming you can still watch Youtube?
On a related note, most websites top out at DSL speeds. The fastest service tiers in my area are cable (100/15) and fiber (35/35). They're actually too fast. I don't think many residential customers have that kind of need for speed (unless they torrent or have a VPN to their business which also has a 35/35 line lol).
Is my broadband slow by today's standards?
