i am using a wireless G connection using my 3com router to play online games, i get latency around 280 ms ( i know this is huge but i live in Egypt so internet connection is not good ) , i wonder if i used a cabled connection using UTP , how much latency would i cut??

Best way is to just test it out.
Depends on ur current setup/where ur laptop is connecting to ur router. Say for example, how many walls ur going thru to reach the router. Less walls = better connection wirelessly already so improvement may be minimal. More walls = worst latency generated and better amt of improvement to be expected.
But gains... there definitely will be gains just because your going from wireless to hardwire. Just the amount of gains that noone can be sure of unless you actually go wired and see for yourself. -
thanks for ur reply , u really convinced me
, by the way i am about 3 walls away from the router i get 3/5 bars connection , but the will be a difference anyway right?

Even if you have ur laptop wirelessly next to the router, there will be slight latency.
So yea, going wired and reducing the 3 walls is definitely going to decrease ur latency. Just don't expect it to be amazing gains, because a lot of the natural latency is still just based on ur ISP connecting to the game server.
Just bring ur laptop to ur router and hook a ethernet to it and test things out. Either way, its going to be the same even if ur 3 walls away wired. -

isn't wired connection alot faster than wireless ?? , please correct me if i am wrong -
Wired is only faster if u are sending files from computer to computer in your own home network.
Wired connection is usually 100 or 1000 mbps. Wireless doesn't really go that fast. The avg home has a 54g wireless network.
Either way, if u are talking about download speed with wired vs wireless, unless ur internet connection is naturally abnormally fast like 100-1000mbps, u wont notice a difference in download speeds from the web if you were wired or wireless. The avg ISP is probably 5-10 mbps download so speedwise when you download files from the internet, wired/wireless will be the same. Only when ur wireless signal is deteriorated to the point where you get like 1-2 bars, then you will witness slowness in your downloads with wireless.
But my post above was in regards to you wanting to see how much improvement you can expect with your latency. Plug in your laptop wired to router. The latency you get will be the same if u were using wired rooms away. -
Great little topic.
And Nice work--thank you for sharing- for me this makes perfect sense though.
