Lenovo Ideapad Z510 Wireless problems

I bought the Lenovo Ideapad Z510 yesterday and was excited to try it out, however one thing i noticed off the bat was the poor WiFi performance on the otherwise flawless laptop. At times it becomes weak, and suddenly disconnects, leaving me with the "Limited Connectivity" sign. I did some research and found this was a widespread flaw in the Z510 which many users reported. There is no current guaranteed fix to this problem, and I was wondering if anyone here could help me and fellow Z510 users out as it's becoming very very annoying.

What WiFi card do you have? If it's the 7260N, install the 16.8.0.6 drivers as I found it to be stable. Although it slows down presumably due to WiFi interference, it's able to return to top speeds instead of resorting to "Limited Connectivity". Go the 7260 thread to get the 16.8.0.6 drivers. Remember to use Inssider to find the best channel.

 

I'm not sure which WiFi card it is, how am I able to check? I apologise for asking "noob" questions, I'm a bit of a technical rookie.

 

On Windows 8.1, open device manager by right clicking the start button then click device manager. Expand the network adapters page and you'll find your WiFi card there.

 

It says Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter...should I still get the 16.8.0.6 driver?

 

Nope. It won't work since it's for Intel 7260 WiFi cards. Many Z510 shipped to USA have the 7260 WiFi card. In your case, you received the one with the Broadcom WiFi card. Tried those steps, didn't work.

 

If you're willing to flash a modded BIOS for your Z510, you can use a search engine to obtain that. Then buy some good WIFi cards like Intel 6300. You can also get the 7260AC and obtain 866.7 Mbps speed though it has an annoying bug that makes the 5 GHz band disappear when the 7260 cannot return to normal speeds (i.e. return to 144 Mbps or 300 Mbps) once it gets to speed drop of no return (2 - 11 Mbps). You can eliminate that by connecting to the 5 GHz band (in my case).

 

That sounds really complicated and definitely out of my league...are there no drivers I can download to resolve this issue?

Well, you can try some Broadcom WiFi drivers here and see if it helps: Station-Drivers - Broadcom (WLan)

Download the 21/11/13 Version 6.30.223.170 (W8.1)/6.31.223.1(W8)/6.32.223.1(W7) by clicking on the floppy drive icon.

 

I have the Windows 8 OS, does that mean I should download the 6.31.223.1(W8) one? Just a bit confused as i'm not sure which one I should download.

All three drivers are bundled together in one package. So if you just extract them to desktop and install it by launching "AsusSetup.exe", it will automatically find the appropriate drivers for your Windows 8.

It's a rather large file. So it'll take a while if you have a lower tier internet plan

 

Been a day since I downloaded and ran those drivers, connections been superb since. I'm going to wait a few more days until I declare it successful, but in the meantime it's been superb. Thanks a lot again!
