OK, i am thinking about extending my wireless network. I have a Linksys WRT54G Ver8. I have no problems throughout the house, or even out side, but me being me, want it better..LOL. Say anyways, I want to get the Linksys WRE54G, how does this work? Will it show up in my windows wireless as me having two routers and i can choose what one i want to connect to? I have heard that it cuts your bandwidth in 1/2 so when im in the house i would want to be connected to my WRTG54G, and out side or something connected to the WRE54G. Is that how it works? Thanks guys!![]()
Made an edit. I have the WRT54G.

You'll only see one ssid. The card will select whichever access point is closest to you.
Have you considered moving to 802.11N? -
How will you connect the modem to your 2 routers?

What do you mean? The WRT54g is the regular router, while the WRE54G is the range expander..... im lost. -
Sorry, I missed the point, you are using the range expander, so basically it works as a relay station or repeater, so it should be transparent in your communication with the AP. I don't know why it should cut the bandwidth in two, the expander is acting as a repeater, that's all. Unless there is a long processing time at the expander which might be the case because it seems that it downconvert the data and upconvert it again.
You will also have to setup a static IP address for the expander, a subnet mask and the gateway.
I also imagine that you will see two networks, the one with the AP and the one with the expander, I guess you will have to instruct your wireless adpater profile not to connect automatically to one or the other, so you can determine which one to connect to manually, whichever is stronger. -

Unless you set it up 100% right, I'd highly recommend against the WRE54G. Died for me after about 6 months. It worked, but speed was crippled, and it was just spotty. I'd suggest running a wire maybe half way and doing an access point, or moving to N (which still won't increase your range much if you have tons of walls).

Hawking technologies has a better solution to extend wireless coverage as well.
