Heres the deal of what I want to accomplish. I have a desktop (3.2ghz p4, 2gb ram, 1000gb+ hard drives) that i want to turn into a server. (keep in mind it has a wireless pci card and will be connected to the network this way).

What i want to accomplish with the server is to have it share music through itunes and windows media player to different pc's in my house (some vista and some xp) and to share all media (movies, and music) to my xbox 360.

I also want specific user directories that only that user has access to, and i want their files to be backed up to the server daily.

It needs to be a print server also.

I would also like for the files on the server to be available to the outside world with name and password of course.

I also want to be able to manage the server remotely on the network and off the network.

So i am really leaning to use microsoft server 2003 standard, but i also have a license for enterprise. From what i have read online from microsofts site, standard seems to fit my needs more. However, I am also willing to go linux so long as the vista pc's will have no problem with the above requirements and the xbox as well.

For those who have done this, or something similar, can i have your insight?

I think you can do it directly under vista (set share to everyfolder you want). The X360 will only connect to Vista HP or Ultimate I believe.
