I have Linksys(BEFCMU10) cable modem and Linksys WRT54GS router.
Yesterday, my internet speed dropped down suddenly from 16 mbps to 240 kbps.
When I contacted charter, they said that my modem was in blacklist and doesn't comply with the update that charter has made and forced me to buy new modem.
To be sure, I bought another Motorola model and the speed is normal now with the modem.
But when I plug it in wireless router, it has only 500 kbps in wireless and full 16 mbps in wired mode from router.
So, I am really confused and don't know what to do?
Its just the problem with the wireless but wired connection from wireless router works fine.![]()

How far away from the router are you when you are testing? If you're sitting right next to it and getting 500 kbps, then immediately after getting 16mbps wired...thats very strange.
Check the routers settings and see if you are on B or G. Althout even B will give you 8 or 9 Mbps.
i have a WRT54GL, its an excellent router. I get about 28Mbps max on G. I have a friend with the same WRT54GS you have, and he tops out at about 17 or 18 Mbps. And his connection is generally very flakey -
Is the router firmware up to date?

Or did your neighbor get a new fancy wifi and is killing your signal? Change channels and those kinda things to see if that helps at all.
If you are only getting 500 from wireless then that suggests interference from something; baby monitor or microwaves or whatever. -

Yes the firmware is up to date.
I think the firmware is 1.52.8.001.
The internet is really fast while plugged in lan with the router but in wireless, its really slow.
Also, I can see that the ssid is different for the both lan and wireless.
I resetted the modem and kept a new name for the ssid.
Now the lan has the old ssid and the wireless has the new ssid.
Any suggestions? -
LAN (as in cable Ethernet) has no SSID. Only wireless has SSID.
Can you elaborate? What's what at this point
Why dont you try to use your router as AP rather than a router?
See this for details. -

My bad!
The LAN connection has the name that I kept for my router before I reset it.
Now I kept a new name for my router.
So the LAN has the old name(ssid) that I had for my router
WIFI has the new ssid.Attached Files:
