I am going out of town for Thanksgiving weekend and I need some kind of wireless internet solution as I will likely not have any working wifi networks around me (well open ones at least). I know you can get those Verizon/AT&T cards for a monthly fee but I really don't need it for a month and I'd like to avoid paying so much money.
I just need it for 5 days or so, does anything like this exist?

If you have a windows mobile or a symbian S60 phone you can use them to tether your laptop, as long as you don't start downloading stuff or doing anything more than email checking and browsing the carrier shouldn't detect anything....
-
I'm pretty sure most any Smartphone is capable of this. It always helps to check the Specs though.....
-
56k modem?
-
In my small town in the middle of the boonies, both the both the Hospital and the Library offer free WiFi. It works 24/7, though if you're at 3 in the morning you may attract some attention from the police in my experience.
-
See if your cell phone is capable of "Phone As Modem"
An iPhone with PdaNet app, will turn iPhone into a WiFi Router. -
Unfortunately, I don't have a smartphone nor do I have any kind of internet capabilities on my regular phone.
And 56k modem? How do you even do that anymore? lol. -
I may get flamed for this..but I will argue,
Your town or w/e your going to is going to have some type of open wifi somewhere. just use one that is open and dont do anything with any resources on the network...just internet. and you should be fine -
Trust me, it is highly unlikely that I'll have open wifi sources around me.
-
you would be surprised...unless we are talking about camping or something LOL
also...if you are that certain...then why will a cell phone work??? -
Well it's gonna be in the mountains, I kinda have a hard time picturing running into a Starbucks down the street up there or something lol
Plus I'm really trying to have some kind of connection right where I'm staying so that I don't waste time driving around and looking for internet. -

Some ISP offer dial-up as a backup. Check with your ISP.
Where my dad lives dial-up is all that's available. I use it very limitedly since the speed is 28.8k max. I forgot how slow that is coming from a FIOS network. -
Enjoy the mountains. The internet will be here when you get back.
-
LOL....Good one ZaZ!
-
If you have a bluetooth module, you should be able to link your cell phone to your computer and use it as a modem. If not, there is always good ol' NetZero.
-
lol 56k it is I guess. So I just download Netzero and I'll be good to go?

why do you need laptops or internet in the mountains?
i second ZaZ's opinion. -
To do my work.
-
What kind of "Work"?
Sound Suspicious.
jk

Doesn't verizon offer a day pass deally. You'd have to get one of their cards, which would be a decent amount, but if you must internet.
-
I just looked into that. From what I understand, you need to purchase a separate device that would be under a 2 year contract which I definitely do not need lol

Go dialup and use Juno free service. I do not know if they have a free service any more. There are limits on usage.

Yeah, and I don't think he's really going to the mountains, either - unless its the Hindu Kush.
