How can I password-protect the file sharing from my laptop? So, for instance, when on another computer trying to connect to mine, i need a user name and password. Is there a way to do this?

Hrm, who are the users you are trying to share with? Are they people that are generally on your network?

If you're sharing on a domain, you can control it based on user names generally (at least, I believe thats how I did it when we had a domain in our home network).

You could always setup an FTP :-D

    or SSH... http://www.openssh.com/windows.html

if you want it integrated with windows... I think you have to turn off "simple file sharing" which will then give you access to user/group permissions for your shared folders. Check google or something.

Yes, it's people who are always on the network. I just don't want them to access my comptuer constantly without my knowledge.

That website makes absolutely no sense to me. I'm sorry, I just don't understand it.

don't worry about SSH, it's not necessary under Windows, I believe.

did you try looking at turning off simple file sharing? check it out.

So there's no harm in turning SIMPLE FILE SHARING off?

I guess I ask because in my situation I have no desire to control who can open what (it's just me on both computers).

I am going to give this a shot to solve my problems but I just wanted to know if there was any downside I should expect.

    Thanks!
