İ bought a netgear wireless N dual band gigabit router, and İ have noticed thart the 5GHZ range is poor and it gives me flucuating connection speed at Times'a the 2.4Ghz G connection on my Brothers Hp is faster, at the same distance. Next to the router with the 5Ghz i was getting 18-28Mbps with 4 but of 5 bars, in my room however i get anywhere between 8-20Mbps with either 3 or 2 bars. İ checked the Cnet review and it states that this model has bad 5GHZ range and the stats Show that the Lynksys WRT-610N has much better 5GHZ performance however the reader reviews state that it has bad 5Ghz range? What are your experinces like should i return this router and get something else or does 5GHz naturally have bad range
-
5GHz doesn't necessarily offer less range. 5GHz has less wall penetrating strength compared to the 2.4GHz channel.
what is yur 5GHz wireless security encryption set at? -
WPA2, BTW my room is 3 stories above the router(router is in the basement). Both my bands are on WPA2 would security encyrption effect the range?
-
I've noticed that also, my very old Linksys router had no security and is faster than my dual-band 5ghz router.. its also wpa2 or higher not sure.
-
u need to set yur N/5GHz channel's security encryption to 'WPA2+AES' mode to achieve N speeds.
also, make sure yur wifi card is set to transmit at full power/range. -
I know for sure it is on WPA2 I think AES, but how do I check?
BTW this morning when I did speed tests I got a constant 25Mbps, after 4 tests. -
Just did a speed test 2 more times, and now I am getting 26Mbps to 27Mbps. Wierd
I use to 6-8Mbps on my old router. -
u would have to access your router's user interface. depending on what router u have, u open up a browser and then type in the router's address. u can then log in as 'admin' and make changes to yur router's settings. security encryption would be under the 'wireless settings' tab.
just to make sure, lets make a little check list:
- make sure u actually have a wireless N wifi card equipped device
- make sure u are on the 5GHz channel (tip: ask or call the tech support to see which channel they recommend yur 5GHz channel to be set at)
- set wifi card to max transmit power
- change router's wireless security encryption to 'WPA2+AES' -
-Yeap WIfi N equipped card
-I changed it to the highest, and now I get 4 out of 5 bars, and 28Mbps (that was what I got right next to the router before)
-how do I do that?
-I have WPA2+AES -
u would need to find yur 'devices' folder and then find yur wifi card. right click it and goto yur wifi card's settings.

Ok I have a Intel 5100, and under 802.11n Channel Width for band 5.2, the value is auto, on the 2.4 it is 20mhz, on both 20mhz is the only option what should they be?
BTW since I have boosted my channel on the router for the 5GHZ line I have done 5 speedtests all of them I got 30Mbps, a huge improvement to my ancient wireless G router which I would get 6 (8 if I was lucky) Mbps. -
5G sucks. Welcome to the hype. I get 300Mbps at around 30 feet through two walls. Get too close and you may overload your radios which will throttle back. My 2.4 radio blows the paint off the walls
I'm using dual band Netgear. I use the 5G in office with little interference, but set up 360 on the 2.4 band. If I move to the back of the house, it's all on the G band.
I think the biggest reason to use 5G is to get away for the neighbors G band interference..I got about 15 G bands around the neighborhood. -
never heard of any issues with gettin too close to a router. what router do u have?

That was a comment from Tim Higgins. It seems a common problem when people set laptop right next to router in frustration to trouble shoot speed problems.
