Hello
I have now intel 5100, it isn't quite as powerful as I'd like.
So what do you recommend for replacement? It should work with Linux.
-
Define powerful- do you mean high power card (in terms of signal strength) or better performance (in terms of mbps)
-
Also, are you sure it's the card and not the antenna design in your machine?
-
I don't want high speed, just it would be capable of connecting networks that are far away.
Well I'm not sure. The laptop is Compal JHL90. -
You could always check in DM to see if it is set to it's highest power..
Don't forget that a WiFi router/access point etc also needs to be able to send a strong signal too, it's not just your laptop. -
I think it is at highest power.Code:
iwconfig wlan0 wlan0 IEEE 802.11abg ESSID:"P2X-3YZ" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.452 GHz Access Point: 00:XX:XX:xX:XX:XX Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off Link Quality=70/70 Signal level=-22 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
Is 5300 more powerful than 5100? -
No- 5300 is based on the same chip that 5100 is and although it's way better for some reason it has the same transmit power, the same chip and with the same antennas it would have more or less the same range.
You need a HP card. It seems there are more of them available in USB flavor rather than as internal cards though. Take a look at Alpha USB adapters for example.
