yep i was worried about the xbox thing, but while he could ping the router, the desktop was unreachable. uninstalling NIS is a bit drastic, i would think disabling it should be enough. anyway if all fails uninstall NIS and try.

one more thing is that i read that this particular router support two distinct networks, but i would think the linksys guys are more equipped to make sure the configuration on the router is fine.

last thing we didn't mention is how about just reboot the router by unplugging it for few sec and reboot the computers as well.

Trust me when I say, from my past experiences...The Antivirus programs needs to be uninstalled sometimes, just to rule them out as the cause. It seems that even though you disable them that's not enough; maybe because no change is done in the systems registry....idk, but I highly recommend uninstalling them...just for troubleshooting sake.

Okay I see your point completely when it comes to that. SO I'm going to do as you ask and unistall NIS 2009. After all I can reinstall it since I purchased the license and it's good for a year right?

Anyways you want me to uninstall it from BOTH the laptop and the desktop right?

I'm at school right now so I've gotta drive home. But I'll be back here in like 40 mins.

Thanks for trying to help me.

And when you say "access" you mean trying pinging the desktop from the laptop correct?

Run, cmd, ping followed by the ip address right?

Yes you can do that...but if you go back to post# 49 you can continue from * "So Therefore....."

And also see the screenshot attached in the post.

    That didn't work.

Someone on cNet (who to be honest I don't know if he's a real technician or trustworthy) claims that IPv6 is the reason the pinging isn't working and therefore the reason the 2 computers can't see each other.

However IPv6 was enabled back on both computers back a few months ago when I had Printer Sharing working flawlessly.

And like I mentioned before the settings on the desktop have not been altered in any way since I sold my last laptop.

So why would it be the "reason" for what's going on now?

Furthermore he gave me a bunch of bull**** links about uninstalling IPv6.

Well first of all if he knew anything at all he'd know that it comes installed with Vista and that there's no way to uninstall it according to MS.

You can only disable IPv6. I tried doing that on both computers at the same time for the Wireless Network Connection Properties and I still had no success.

Leave IPv6 disabled on both computers by taking out the check on each computer's network cards.

Can you post the ipconfig /all results here for both computers please. And can you ping each computer from the other? Can they both get on the Internet?

They can both get on the internet.

When I try to ping I get

    disable ipv6 on desktop.
try plugging the laptop with an Ethernet cable to the router see if you can ping the desktop and visa versa.

    Okay I didn't even disable IPv6.

I just connected the Ethernet Cable to the laptop and the Network and Sharing Center picked it up right away. Now when I click on "view full map" it shows both the laptop and the desktop.

Also I tried "pinging" and the ping was SUCCESSFUL.

Also I was able to find the printer.

I didn't add it however because I should able to and want to print wirelessly.

I guess I could connect the desktop thru the ethernet cable to the router but the bottom line is that I didn't have to do that a few months ago.

So what do I do now?

Ok...before your post I was gonna say...this could be anything really...I don't understand why you're getting a reply destination host unkown when you try to ping wirelessly...it could be the router, or some setting on the computer...and it seems there is so much going on on those computer network wise that I don't even know where to start to help troubleshoot.

Umm...I would say, go back wirelessly and do this on both computers...go to Start-->Run and type services.msc and hit enter. Look for Application Layer gateway, Computer Browser, DHCP, DNS, Link-Layer Topology Mapper, Net.Tcp port sharing, Netlogon, Network Connections, Network List, Print Spooler, Remote Procedure Call, SSDP Discovery, TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, UPnP Device host and Workstation services and " Start" all of them.

If this doesn't resolve the issue I would reset the Router as it's a good possibility that could be the cause of the problem.

And did you put in the DNS Suffixes? If you're not in a "Domain" environment take them out. And you did uninstall the Antivirus programs right?

Edit: See image attached...go to that section of the Wireless Adapter Properties window and post the screenshot here please. (For any one of the computers)

Not sure what you mean by that...

I have "HOME" as the workgroup. Do I need to have a domain or something?

I never did as far as I know back a few months ago when I had it working fine.

And yes Norton Internet Security 2009 which I had installed on both computers is currently UNinstalled.

So I have no IS running on both of them.

    Hey makaveli...

Okay I'm at the window where all those things you mentioned are listed.

Now some of them have "Automatic" under start up types.

Others have "manual". That means that I have to start them every time I log in right?

Should I therefore change all those things you mentioned to "Automatic"?

I meant did you put in the DNS Search Suffixes that you have in your post #60 and 61. In the Properties section of your Network Card under Internet Protocol, select Properties then click Advanced, the DNS Tab and at the bottom take out the nc.rr.com.

    Right...yes you can do that.

Edit: When you're done that..go back to my edit in post #65 w/ the image. To find that section click on the computer network icon in the task tray, click Connect to a Network--> Network and Sharing Center--> Manage Network Connections and right click on the Wireless Card and choose Properties. Post that section here.

What about "Remote Procedure Call Locator"

Also should I restart both the laptop and the computer after I do these changes?

Locator could stay as is...on manual...if it's needed it will start. But yes once you've set them to automatic you could restart although I don't think it would be neeccessary.

And don't forget to post the section I mentioned above in my edit...(if it still doesn't work.) Trying pinging again also....

Okay I made all the changes on both the laptop and the desktop. Restarted and checked to make sure they were changed...

Everything seems okay. All those things you mentioned have "started" EXCEPT Netlogon. I set it to "Automatic" for both the laptop and the router. Pressed apply and then okay under properties.

Then it went back to the main list and I Pressed "start". It started to do whatever it's supposed to do but then stopped. The message it gives is,

"The Netlogon service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."

And I took two pictures of what you requested. I'll try to get them here for you in a second.

I haven't tried pinging yet though. And I did look at the "view full map" under the N&S Center and it wouldn't show both computers like it did when one of them was connected thru the ethernet cable to the router.

So I doubt the pinging will work. But let me see.

Just tried pinging from my desktop to the laptop with both of them connected wirelessly to the router and both with no firewall or internet security. Also both have the free version of Network Magic. Also all those settings you told me to start are on.

    Hmmmm...ok

Can you post a print screen though instead. I can hardly see the section; You should have a 'print screen' button at the top of the keyboard. When you press that, open up MS Paint and paste (ctrl + v) the print screen, save it as a jpeg and upload it like you did the attachment above. be sure to show everything in the list...so u may need to take two print screens.

Edit: And did u take out the nc.rr.com from the Network Card properties. In that same section of the print screen, scroll down to see the "Internet Protocol", select it, choose Properties and then click the Advanced button; then the DNS tab..take out nc.rr.com. And also take out the check for IPv6...you don't need it.

But yea...other than that, i'm truly stumped on what else to try other than a Router reset!

You guys are gonna kill me. It was the router.

I had enabled AP Isolation on both the 5Ghz and the 2.4GHz networks on the advice of someone here a few weeks ago when I got it and I was setting it up.

They had said that it would help boost signal...

So I switched it to enabled and that was the problem.

Thanks for trying to help me though. Is it safe to keep those other settings I changed as is?

    I didn't disable IPv6 since I knew that wasn't the cause.

    @ makaveli

Is it safe to keep those changes that you suggested I made?

Thanks....and yeah you have no idea how relieved I am that I finally figured it out.

Now the only thing I have to work on is getting a new laptop.
