Hello everyone, i've got a Compal FL90 notebook since almost 1 year now and i recently issued some weird lags. Let me explain:
I'm playing to some games (i.e. Enemy Territory) and i noticed some disappointing lag sometimes. It happens everyday like 3/4 times; i disconnect from every program using internet that i was using at this moment (TeamSpeak2, mIRC, game, XFire, steam) just for few seconds and then all comes back to normal. The problem is that i must wait that all my programs reconnect and then i must launch my game again... which, when i play officials matchs, is very annoying.
So the questions are these ones: How can i avoid these kind of lags ? and where do that lag comes from ?
Here is my laptop: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Compal-FL90-Notebook.4209.0.html
Ps: Please i really need to find a solution before end of month because i have importants events incoming.
Ps(2): I'm really not skilled in computers, so if you want me to find any file or any information about my connection/rooter/laptop, please explain well how i can find that.
Ps(3): I'm french so sorry for my engrish :![]()
Cheers.

XP or Vista?
What kind of network, wireless or wired?
Direct connect to modem or router?
Can this be duplicated with another machine?
Are you losing the internet connection (as denoted by a network unplugged message or if you look in Network and Sharing Center in vista is the INTERNET connection still present)?
Make and model of router? Make and Model of Modem?
That's for starters -
-XP or Vista?
Windows XP Pro (service pack 3)
-What kind of network, wireless or wired?
Wireless
-Direct connect to modem or router? Can this be duplicated with another machine?
Laptop connected to router (thanks to wireless) which is connected (wired) to another computer.
-Are you losing the internet connection (as denoted by a network unplugged message or if you look in Network and Sharing Center in vista is the INTERNET connection still present)?
Nothing is denoted in a message so i guess internet connection is still present (did i answered you
?)

Orange Livebox (link: http://www.zdnet.fr/zdnet/i/edit/pr/2007/03/orange_livebox_image1.jpg )
Could be usefull: The other computer doesn't have any internet problem.. so, wireless/laptop's drivers problem ?
Thanks for fast answer gerryf19 -
OK, well, of course the first place we start looking at is the drivers for the wireless adapter.
In the US, that laptop comes with a intel 5100 adapter. Is that the case with your laptop?
The odd thing is that it worked previously, but now is not. Did you update the drivers (or did Windows update?)
First thing to do when something changes is roll back drivers if the problem was initiated by a change. If you did not, try updating the drivers to the most recent ones from the manufacturer site (Intel).
It appears that the Orange box is a dsl modem/router (you have one device instead of two). Is that the case? Some times, these devices are updated by your ISP, thus necessitating a driver update. -
First, i uploaded "DxDiag.txt" where you can find lots of informations about my laptop, and i think drivers can be found there. Sorry i'm really noob in computers, the only thing that i found with Intel in it was my "intel core duo" lol...
This problem is here since approximately 1month, i'm updating windows everytime there is a new update so i really can't tell if there was a special one 1 month ago.
For the drivers, a friend of me told me (3days ago) to update my drivers in case it would be the problem (link: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&OSFullName=Windows* XP Professional&lang=eng ). He said me to open the x32 folder and then to execute "dpinst32.exe". I did that, my connection lagged out and then came back. So i concluded my drivers were updated.
Should i roll back drivers ? If yes, how?
About the orange box, i really don't know how to check if i have 1 or 2 device(s).

don't worry about the one or two devices for the moment
START, right click COMPUTER, left click MANAGE
Find DEVICE MANAGER on the LEFT, select it
Click the + next to NETWORK ADAPTERS on the right
Doubleclick your INTEL ADAPTER, go to the DRIVER tab, click on ROLL BACK DRIVER button
reboot -
Ok, i just did it. But don't you think it will just change the drivers i just updated (thanks to friend's help) to the ones i had when i was lagging too ?
good night btw :O -
What antivirus/antispyware are you running, and are you running that in addition to the built-in Windows firewall?
-
Good call: many people will use a default setting on their av which in many cases work reasonably but when you turn up the protection you will start noticing a lag.
-
Thanks; I'm also thinking that if the built-in Windows firewall is enabled at the same time that a third-party AV/firewall is being used, there is the possibility for conflict that would cause further lag as the system tried to deal with the conflict.

@Shyster1 and Kurat:
I've got Kaspersky 9 (Incl. firewall) and my windows firewall is on .. i know i'm a noob,i should have think of that.
I'll just uninstall kaspersky and download some AV only with windows firewall on.
Should work fine. I'll tell you guys soon if it's better.
Thanks for all time you gave in this post.
Best regards, iLoS -
iLoS: you may only need some tweaking done within Kaspersky, I have no experiance with Kaspersky, but there are a-lot of people here who know it inside out.
